Whom Marciano's opponents beat is irrelevant.

Marciano didn't beat many big men, that doesn't mean he couldn't have done so ,it simply means he didn't do so. The problem on this site is there are some who cannot accept Marciano was mortal. Again I pull a name out of the hat. WILLIS APPLEGATE!!!!!

Do you know something? I don't believe you would even be arguing about this if I wasn't the poster.

Hard to actually guage that. We do know the finishing punch unlike those earlier ones, is reporeted to have knocked out his teeth and smashed his bridgework.

Also the Dave Whitlock who was ranked as the #10 light-heavyweight by The Ring in the 1948 yearly ratings, and ranked #7 in the 1949 rankings. He defeated Layne, who had been a pro less than one year to that point, in early 1950. His rankings were not due to defeating Layne. Up to his first two Layne fights he had lost only to Grant Butcher, and was outweighed by Layne by six pounds in the fight in which he outpointed him.

From the Layne fights on he fought a whole series of brutal matchups with men ranked at the top of the light-heavyweight or heavyweight ranks (I think Whitlock was not well managed), but managed a comeback in the mid-fifties and again earned a #10 light-heavyweight ranking in 1955.

Over his whole career, besides Layne, he had wins over Bob Dunlap, Phil Muscato, Nick Barone, and Eddie Cotton.

This indicates Louis was going back, but also it says Louis had only lost to the incumbent heavyweight champion over a fifteen year period, and that loss was after a long layoff while he was now active.

It doesn't provide evidence that he was some sort of easy mark.

It cracked his bridgework but did not knockout any teeth that is folklore. One of Marciano's best kos has never to my knowledge been discussed on this site.I find that curious. I think maybe a legend feeds on itself?

People also overlook the second Walcott knockout which was another one shot wonder.

I left them off because I'd already discredited your inclusion of them.:patsch
Just for you, I'll say it again Vingo was an unproven novice. At 189lbs he wasnt big either

ShKor was never more than a trial horse his record was30-18-2

He had been kod in 1 .5 minutes in his previous fight.

Serious question have you actually seen any footage of him?

.Louis was a relic. who by his own admission had had his last great fight 5 years earlier.

Stop with the blind fan worship for God's sake, its nauseating.

I suppose Mike Tyson's knockout over Larry Holmes shouldn't be given any credit too?

They were 6'2" or better, had winning records, and one was a ex world champ.

Those are the facts. YOU just have opinion.

Had Rocky just made it past them, your opinion would have more validity... But he did not just barley get past them... he destroyed them. Just as an ATG should.

You obviously have a problem with Marciano.

You have the right to your wrong opinion.:hat

Louis was 6'1.5" Source? Joe Louis in his autobiography
Vingo was a green stringbean 189lbs novice who had beaten no one of any note and his ko ratio was less than39%

Shkor was a journeyman who had been bombed out in under 2 minutes by Walcott in his last fight. He had won just 2 of his previous 6 fights.
You need to get your facts straight, and you need to read this before you make anymore silly unsupported statements .

This was a bruising, crowd-pleasing battle. Marciano won handily enough but failed to even knock down his opponent, who had fought only twice in the previous two years. Applegate's best round was the third, which the referee also took from Marciano because of a low punch. Red landed plenty of good punches, typically in the early parts of rounds, but Marciano almost always came back later to take the play away. Marciano's best round was the sixth. The attendance was 4167 and the gross gate was $7,6l6 Applegate had been floored by Agramonte in his previous fight.

I don't have a problem with Marciano ,I have a problem with his fan boys who think he ate fire and sh*t thunderbolts.
