You said it yourself, he wasn't a puncher in the pure sense, which is what we are talking about here.
Plenty had lots of power, but very few are ranked among the hardest hitters, and Frazier ain't one of them.

No, it's not irrelevant, that's the point, we are talking about guys who were famous for their sheer punching power.
Taking Shavers for example, he was never known as a great boxer, but plenty rank him as a huge hitter.
Patterson was never perceived like that.

Other than a crazy 1st round the rest of this fight was a pretty one sided beatdown.

Well were gonna have to agree to disagree, Patterson knocked out world class fighters and tough contenders with 1 punch. That for me is what I call a puncher, but obviously you have a different perspective on it. We can still rate Patterson as a puncher, while maybe not being on same level as some of the greatest Heavyweight punchers, if you want to come an agreement in that regard.

I think Frazier hit harder than plenty of guys who are described as punchers.

Trinidad-Mayorga were strictly 2 world class power punchers when the fight happened.

Plenty considered Patterson a so called power puncher when he fought. Where do you come up with this crap?

You wouldn't know what you are looking at. Knowledgeable observers will be taking note of what actually happened when he hit them, and what sort of condition he left them in. Hint - it wasn't good.

You don't have to be in a small group of individuals to be considered a power puncher. It's not "powerfullest" puncher or top 5 power puncher.

Embarrassing. You don't even know who they are much less what sort of record they had durability wise. Critical thinking and actual research are lost on you.

Bracketing a bunch of guys as "not hard to KO", guys you wouldn't know from a bar of soap, is telling.

He doesn't have to be. A "power puncher" doesn't have to hit as hard as A or B and there's sure not much proof he doesn't hit as hard as X or Y.

The other thing is your revisionist history counts for zero if Floyd was considered a power puncher in his time, among his peers, when he actually fought Liston.....which is what the thread is about.

Like who makes the rule they have to be "famous for their sheer punching power". You don't have to live up to the criteria of "sheer" to be a power puncher. There's been thousands of power punchers. Plucking out Shavers and using his punching reputation as a benchmark against Patterson is ludicrous. The guy is in contention to be the most famous, strictly for power, in history. Certainly among knowledgeable fans. Patterson isn't in his class, power wise, but doesn't need to be.

Just to expose your hypocrisy - you wax lyrical about Sonny Liston and have been going on and on and on about him since you landed here. Liston fought in the same era as Patterson and was stopping the same era of little fighters you lambast as small and easy to knock out yet your opinion of Sonny is enormous both power wise and ATG wise.

By no means am i saying Patterson was an enormous hitter or matches up to some of the modern day behemoths but at the time he fought it's hardly unfair to consider him a "power puncher". There was plenty of talk about his power back in the day. His left hook that pole axed Ingo is still famous today.

That may be true but when you knock people out like he did regardless of circumstance you've got power. It's becoming a teeny bit cliche to lump speedy guys like Patterson, RJJ, SRL etc into this bracket which probably, if anything, is starting to perhaps underrate their actual power. I know that's not your intention, mind.

Guys like Howard Davis Jr landed loads of punches people didn't see due to his crazy speed and positions. They were unaffected until late career at the time he fought Coverson he started settling down and punching with more leverage. He still had blinding handspeed but was getting much more meat on his punches and it was by far the most powerful he had ever looked. Thomas Hearns is another good example. Blinding handspeed in the amateurs and no doubt landing punches at times that opponents didn't see but with no effect. Turns pro and learns leverage and a few other Kronk secrets and he's bowling them over like tenpins.
