One sided mismatches that actually got a rematch

I would disagree with Louis-Schmeling and Fenech-Nelson. Fenech-Nelson - although I felt Fenech deserved the nod - was fought at a blistering pace on the inside and was deserving of a rematch from the action, let alone the controversial decision. As for Louis-Schmeling, again, competitive and Louis was still landing bombs on Schmeling although Max had taken the play away from Joe. On action alone they were both deserving.

 

Tyson/Bruno has to be listed, Bruno did better than expected in the first fight, landed some decent punches at range and close up but the second fight was ridiculously one sided.

 

We see this fight today as an epic mismatch, but Louis said that it was one of his toughest fights.

Simon gave a percentage of his purse as did Buddy Baer,Louis donated both his purses ,less training exes.

 

A then untested and still relatively unknown Larry Holmes scored a dominant 12 rounds near shutout of Earnie Shavers who only 6 months earlier had given heavyweight Champ, Ali hell in a title fight. Holmes even had Earnie out on his feet in the final round and almost stopped him in the final seconds. They had a rematch a year or so later after Holmes became the WBC champion. Still, despite the one sidedness of their first encounter, I don’t think anyone at the time said that a second matchup was a mismatch though that was probably due to the sheer power that Shavers possessed.

 

Given the different results of both Louis/Schmeling and Fenech/Nelson, we can agree that the rematches were warranted.

Still, Nelson looked absolutely horrible (due to malaria) in the first fight. If the judges hadn’t robbed Fenech, everyone would’ve been okay without a rematch.

You ever say out loud to yourself, "Holy **** I'm an idiot sometimes. I must be getting early onset Alzheimer's"?

Well, that's pretty much what I said when I saw your comment before I thought of Liston-Patterson. Can't believe I thought about the question for a good two minutes and missed that.

 

I was rethinking this subject matter today and a couple of fights stuck in my head. First of all, the Bob Foster-Pierre Fourie title fight in New Mexico. Good matchup the first time, as Fourie was a solid contender, but Foster completely dominated the bout and ended up winning the fight by scores of 148-120, 149-130 and 149-138 with the AP agreeing with a score of 148-140. I certainly don't grasp the first two scores, but the 3rd judge and the wire service score was understandable at 12-1-2 and 10-2-3 for Foster. So why a rematch? Well, there was an awful lot of big money coming out of South Africa at the time. It shouldn't have been allowed, but money talks.

On the subject of Foster. He beats up badly on Roger Rouse in a non-title in '68 and Rouse goes 2-3 in his next five fights. Losing to clubfighters and getting his arse handed to him by 'Bossman' Jones, but then pulls out a win over the well-regarded Larry Buck. Apparently that was enough to give him a rematch with the title on the line no less. Montana must've been putting up a lot of money to lead their lamb to slaughter a second time.
