Skip forward to 4:30. This is old footage of what amounts to a closed doors shoot match between AAU Champion & professional wrestler Bob Roop, and an aspiring professional wrestler. Notice the positioning and classic catch-wrestling/jujistu holds and locks. [yt]8TrOStf1T38[/yt] There's also a brief clip of Hiro Matsuda punishing some guy in a mask at 3:30.
Roop, Severn, Shamrock, Williams (Dr. Death), were all genuine bad asses, because of their amateur background and knowledge of genuine take downs and holds and submissions. Given the situation, alot of times guys would try to double cross one another to get the bigger press and money---but the real shooters, who knew better, and weren't the typical tough guy turn wrestler, could break bones and make them realize to never again do bad business. It would have been interesting to see guys like Roop, Williams, and Severn against the old time shooters like Gotch and Lewis. These guys were essentially MMA before MMA ever existed.
