Name me some fighters you saw very early in their career, before they were on most peoples' radars, who you picked to be great and were and those you were convinced would be great and failed. I would really like to hear from the old-timers on this one. I am thinking hard on mine today.
I"m wrong most of the time...Andre Ward came true. Devon Alexander not so much...I like Hopkins alot after the first Jones fight when no one talked about him much. I thought Broner would do better...but has imploded.
Always thought from the beginning that Lennox would overcome all. However i did think Tyrell Biggs was the second coming of Ali. I always thought Tyson's reign of terror would be relatively brief. Some you get right some wrong. I reckon Anthony Joshua has all it takes to go right to the top.I know thats not for this forum but it will be interesting to see....that's what sport and life is about.
I actually Tyson was going to Ko Lewis 'Hey if Rahman can do it.....' I picked Audley to beat Haye (yes i actually became convinced with Audleys bull****) I picked Paciqauo to beat Hatton. 2 sluggers but Paciqauo had beaten the likes of Marquez, Morales and Barrera, i thought hed have a bit too much and would stop Hatton late. I didnt expect a 2 round drestruction. I also said Marquez will get shafted in the 3rd fight with Pacqiauo (with a Mayweather superfight looming)
Great is kind of a relative term, but I picked Tim Bradley to be where he's at before there was any buzz surrounding him. You could just see, with the subtle things he does, that he would eventually be something special. I also wanna take some credit for Keith Thurman, although I can't really. I wasn't entirely sure he would be "great" but I could see the talent
I thought Corrie Sanders would be great after his fight with Mike Dixon... Further enforced when he stopped Bert Cooper... whoops! I did pick Eric Morales as being something special back in 1995!
right: holyfield was the most impressive boxer in the '84 olympics for me, like, by far and away wrong: i didn't think that pacquiao would be all that successfull with him being a one-armed fighter (left hand).
I thought that Greg Page had the talent to be much better, but it became obvious very early in his career that he weighed too much for his bouts. - Chuck Johnston
I saw Lloyd Honeyghan's first pro fight at the RAH in Dec 80 having heard and read a lot about him in the amateurs and thought he would go on to something special...and he did, maybe not to a world wide audience but certainly in UK terms. I remember him boxing on the undercard of a McGuigan fight at the same venue in June 84 & talking to his opponent's manager...we discussed Honeyghan & when I said I thought Lloyd would become world champion the guy laughed at me and looked at me as if I was stupid (no sarky comments please). I also picked him to beat Curry & was roundly laughed at by my mates...we went to the Dun Cow on the Old Kent Road that night & listened to the fight on the way home...did I have the last laugh or what? On the other side of the coin...when I saw Goyo Vargas beat Paul Hodkinson I thought he would go on to be a long term world champion...can't win 'em all. I was also convinced Roy Gumbs would knock Mark Kaylor out...oh well...
Duran in a 1st round KO in MSG SRL in the amateurs in an event at Nassau Coliseum Rodrigo Valdez Cooney as a middleweight in the NYC golden gloves Riddick Bowe as a light heavyweight Juan Roldan in a KO over Animal Fletcher Kallie Knoetzee KO over Bill Sharkey & Duane Bobick Willie Dewitt-thought he would be suited for the pros with his power but wrong trainer & management Tony Ayala-first watched him KO a Ken Norton look-a-like in the amateurs, the guy was a ft taller and fit, Tony was fat and not muscular
I knew that Marquez was going to give Pac problems in the third fight, which was an unpopular opinion among my friends who follow boxing, as they all thought JMM was washed-up after the loss to Floyd. I also called Hopkins beating Trinidad, although I didn't think it would be as one-sided as it ended up. The one that I called wrong that stands out the most was the second Margarito-Cotto fight, as I felt it would end similarly to the first bout.
