    :-(

Ticket sales for the big fight between Joe Calzaghe vs Roy Jones have been hit by the credit crunch. Around 7,000 have been sold so far for the 20,000- seat arena but organisers expect a big ‘walk-up’ on the night.

Gareth Williams, Calzaghe’s lawyer, admitted: “The credit crunch has had a major impact on people’s ability to spend at present.

Look at the clamour there was just 12 months ago for the Ricky Hatton v Floyd Mayweather fight in Las Vegas.

“In between then and now there has been a major change in what disposable income the people who are still in jobs have to spend.”

John Wirt, chief executive of Square Ring Promotions who are staging the fight in partnership with Calzaghe’s new promotional company, said:

“The clash was originally down to take place on September 15.

“But a hand injury that Joe picked up forced a postponement.

“Since then the pound has become weaker against the dollar, affecting fans’ ability to buy, and I’m sure they’ve also looked closely at New York hotel prices and seen how expensive they can be.”

Even the New York ice hockey derby between the Rangers and Islanders at MSG failed to sell out, while basketball team the Knicks were offering special midweek rates to try to pull in a few more punters to the Garden. It is expected MSG will end up making special offers to tempt fight fans to swell the crowd. The fight is 36-year-old Calzaghe’s first venture as a promoter

If "big walk up" means giving away free tickets, I'll go. Otherwise, it's not even worth the money for the PPV, much less $200 a ticket for seats.

A lot of people are going to lose money on this. HBO is going to learn that producing a 24/7 show does not automatically translate into huge gate and ppv numbers.

Fight is atleast 5 years too late.

Blaming it on the economy is convenient.

The truth is people sometimes don't want to eat ****.

so question remains why calzaghe chose to stage it in the US when he could get 60-70 thousand in the UK especially against roy jones

apart from the MSG appeal, btw eef the MSG
