I feel he still has a weak chin. I said to people that I felt he would win about 117-111 vs. Alexander, in the end he probably won a bit wider. Here is a few reason why I am not getting carried away. I felt Shawn Porter won every round against Alexander. I have already seen similar performances from Khan only for him to come unstuck in his next fight. Just watch the fights he had with Judah or Kotelnik (many felt Kotelnik beat Alexander). Back then people were saying the move to 140lbs made him stronger and he was unbeatable with Freddie Roach. He was still making silly mistakes if you watch but he was able to get away with it against someone who fights negativley and moves backwards. It's still only last year that he was dropped twice and nearly lost on points with Virgil Hunter in his corner at 144lbs, so that for me dismisses the new weight and trainer theory. Anyway like I said no reason to get carried away. If you put him in with anyone who is a world class pressure fighter or puncher and you would have to expect him to come unstuck. I includ the improved Maidana, the over rated but still decent Kell Brook, Shawn Porter, Keith Thurman and Manny Pacquiao in that list. Could he give Mayweather a tough fight? stylistically yes but he would still be an under dog for me. I find it so many critisized Keith Thurman when he shut out a tough fighter in Bundu, just because you Yanks haven't seen him doesn't mean he is rubbish. He clearly beat Gavin in my eyes and also stopped Lee Purdy winning pretty much every single round for me. I think Keith Thurman would knock Amir Khan out and I will admit Khan would probably give Mayweather a harder night but he would still probably end up getting stopped vs. Thurman for me. I am not slating Khan either he is world class and is one of the most exciting boxers on the world scene in years but some people are just acting daft with the hype again as though they have never followed his career. Rant over. :deal
The problem for boxers with high ring IQ sometimes is they think too much As smart as Floyd is, maidana went caveman on him and took him to the edge Also, historically Roy jones and bhops springs to. Mind Jones hand speed beat the technically sound bhop Khan will get through the defense And Floyd does not have enough power to ko khan Floyd's in ring adjustments mean he will eventually take over in the fight
Atleast his defence is something he can improve on. The moment he doesn't follow his game plan, is the moment he could get knock down or out, but by a big puncher.
Roy Jones Jr is an all time great who had a lot more skill and power than Khan also you could ague Mayweather is better than Hopkins. As for your statement that Mayweather does not have enough power to KO Khan, that maybe the case but ultimately you can't bank on a guy's chin when he has been put over by Drilzane, Komjathi (even though the KD wasn't scored), put over by Gomez and then badly hurt later in the fight, given a long count vs. Willie Limond, startched by Presscott, lucky not to be stopped vs. Maidana, forced into retreat by Peterson, KO'd by Garcia, and dropped twice by an over the hill Diaz. You can hardly bank on that one.
Khan only has problems with slow, B level fighters. He will do much better against ATG's Floyd and Pac.
What are you looking to be convinced of? Amir is spectacularly gifted but fatally flawed in mentality and chin. He has about 2-3 years left in him...enjoy his boxing while he's still here... He was on his way to becoming the unified champion at 140 intill Timothy ruined his plans.. Now he is finally back on track but at a different weight class. Floyd & Pacquiao are giant obstacles for any fighter...Brook is a fantastic opportunity and potential fight... You know what Khan's biggest threat right now is? Time & patience...
Khan is what he is. He will look good against fighters with the right style and lacking power like Alexander or Malignaggi. Against fighters that can time his speed with some power and/or pressure fighters with power, at best he will be going life and death. I will credit him in that he's not falling into range as much when throwing his flurries, but there's nothing there that makes me think he would beat Floyd, Pacquiao, Garcia, etc.
Khan looked really good against Alexander but his speed masks a couple of flaws. He often leaves his guard wide open when he throws punches. He's very open for a counter at times and is open for a perfect uppercut.
Also he never seems to hurt his opponents anymore. This will be his undoing if he comes up against guys like Porter, Thurman, Brook or Gracia again. All these ko him in my opinion. He's still the same Khan who looks good when he has the right kind of fighter put in front of him but he won't be able to fight timid southpaws forever.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lUasC23GO4o Which rounds does Alexander win then? because I can't find any, certainly not more than 3. The score cards were a joke, Porter clearly dominated the fight regardless of his approach.
Agree entirely with iceferg, and so does Virgil Hunter more to the point. Him yelling at Khan to keep moving as if he was in there with Pipino Cuevas says it all. Khan's a good fighter with fast hands and feet, high tempo, and a weak jaw to go with his lack of poise. Alexander, in all honesty, was pathetic. The guy was all smiles after being uncompetitive and beaten in every round. Rare to see such a lack of pride at the highest levels of the sport.
