well, if he cant fight because hes hurt, the ref will stop it anyway. so, yes, the ref has the final say
not always check Mercante jr in Cotto vs Foreman for the biggest example of that rule in recent times :!: [yt]Z9MIEuHvlh0[/yt]
Remember when Mercante Jr. made the fight continue after Foreman's corner threw in the towel against Cotto? What a jackass. EDIT: Robney beat me to it.
That was disgusting. Mercante is a serious ******* for that one. No it wasn't thrown by mistake. Foreman was getting pummeled n his knee was useless. It was sick.
From my understanding, it was implemented to halt the blatant fight fixing that was plaguing boxing. Boxers, their training staff (and sometimes doctors) would take bribes to either go down in a certain round, or throw in the towel at a certain point or stop the fight due to a BS cut. The rule brought an end to that by stipulating that only the referee would be allowed to make that judgement.
Merchante shoulda stopped it himself before that towel was thrown. Foreman was clearly injured and clearly couldn't defend himself. His corner tried to save him. That was just disgusting. Lost all respect for mercante. No clearly hobbled fighter could expect to win or even survive without being ko'd against a fighter of cotto's caliber. Seen that with Martinez who is levels above foreman. Mercante was douche bag of the year that year.
That's the only fight I ever seen, by the way, in which a corner threw in the towel n the red threw it back out. Anyone familiar with another instance?
In a roundabout way, the Beau Jack vs Ike Williams fight is feesible. Williams was begging for the referee to stop the fight (a fight he was handily winning), and Jack's corner was protesting for the fight to end...but the referee ordered the two combatants to fight on...!!!
