All three were well schooled in the finer points of boxing technique. That quality was further enhanced by the seasoning they gradually acquired during their first decade of competition. On top of that they had to be flexible enough to make the necessary adjustments as they aged. It also helped that all three had great chins.
Roberto Durán Samaniego (born June 16, 1951) is a Panamanianformer professional boxer who competed from 1968 to 2001. He is a four-weight world champion, having held titles at lightweight, welterweight, light middleweight, and middleweight; as well as reigns as the undisputed and lineal lightweight champion, and the lineal welterweight champion.[1] He is also the second boxer to have competed over a span of five decades, the first being Jack Johnson. Durán was known as a versatile brawler and pressure fighter, which earned him the nickname of "Manos de Piedra" ("Hands of Stone") for his formidable punching power. Duran was another of the three fighters in the 5 decade club.
Saoul Paul Mamby (born June 4, 1947) was an American professional boxer between 1969 and 2008. He held the WBC Junior Welterweight Title from 1980- 82. Mamby was the third man listed in the article for lengetivity.
Saoul Mamby, Johnson was mentioned along with Foreman but were left out because Johnson was inactive for 7 years from 1911 and Foreman`s career was idle from `78-87.
There are 5 men in total, who boxed in 5 different decades. In addition to the 4 already mentioned we have Barney Malone.
I was thinking about Tiger Jack Fox, Archie Moore and Baby Vasquez, but they all took part in only 4 decades. Good question.
Ironically, two eventual "5 Decade fighters" fought each other on 5/4/76, with Duran winning by UD (Convention Center, Miami Beach). I do not think this is a great idea-unless against middling competition-but with that chin, he might be able to avoid a KO until he had a heart attack in the ring at age 114.
