Op Ed, Mayweather won't be awarded close decision

Call me crazy, but I think Floyd Mayweather is at a disadvantage when it comes to a close decision against Pacquiao. Let me explain why.

People say the MGM and Las Vegas in general is loyal of Mayweather which gives him the edge, but I don't think they're loyal to him for the reasons you may think.

    Mayweather is the money-man.

Mayweather and his "undefeated therefore TBE" persona is what draws so much money into his hands, into Las Vegas, into the MGM. I truly believe in the case of fighting anyone other than Pacquiao, he would be awarded the close-decision because if Mayweather loses that 0, he loses the ability to draw in the money from his undefeated status. He says it best, haters are fans. People watch him to win and watch him to lose. People are waiting for that person to defeat him, and that ranks in a ton of money.

If Floyd loses, no one cares anymore. He's lost. He's no longer undefeated. MGM loses money off him now, Las Vegas loses money now, boxing loses money now because Mayweather is no longer the draw he once was once he becomes defeated.

But here comes Pacquiao. This may be the only circumstance where Mayweather losing is better financially and where he could be at a close-decision disadvantage even at the MGM and in Las Vegas! They are loyal to him because of the consistent, huge pay-days they bring to them...not because of some unconditional, love of attachment. It's money. Money talks. And in the case of Pacquiao, Mayweather LOSING to him would give MGM and Las Vegas MORE money than if Mayweather beat him.

Think about it... if Mayweather loses the close decision, they do a rematch and bring in another 400 million dollars. If Mayweather wins, the money wouldn't be as great. Money talks, and them being loyal to Mayweather is a result of money talking, and the money was in the man, Money Mayweather.

You could use the argument, "Well, Mayweather is now still the big money draw if he wins and can go beat the opponents bringing in huge pay-days." Well, yeah, but for how long? A year? He may even retire after he beats Pacquiao once. And it still wouldn't be as much as if he had to redeem himself in a rematch. If he loses, he'll bring in another 400 million dollars fighting Pac again.

So, if there was anything fishy happening below the scenes , as Holyfield said, "Boxing decides who wins," if boxing likes $$$ they'll want to give Pacquiao the close-decision to get another 400,000,000$ rematch.

I'm telling you. Mayweather being awarded close-decisions was loyalty based off of money and him being able to bring it in due to being undefeated. But in this scenario, the Money-man winning isn't where the most money would come from.

    Thoughts?

All in all, it's not fair, but I feel like loyalty to Mayweather has been tied to his ability to continue to bring in huge paydays, and that wouldn't be the best route to take money-wise if he won against Pacquiao. Pacquiao winning a close-decision is a bigger win financially than if Mayweather wins because Mayweather having to redeem himself in a rematch would bring in a TON more money than watching Pacquiao get beat again in a rematch, especially when they're both about to retire.

I really hope this isn't the case though. I hope a close decision isn't influenced by politics, but we've seen it happen in the past and it could definitely happen again.

Of course there's not. They didn't do one because it would've taken too long when they were already rushing to get the contract done in time for May 2nd.

But I can guarantee you with every cell in my body that if Mayweather loses, he'll want to fight Pacquiao again.

Hey, over-thinking things is what enabled me to confidently predict the May 2nd fight in November.

I agree. When you look at the scores in De La Hoya, Canelo and Maidana the judges aren't giving Floyd any favors.

Antonia I sincerely hope that this fight will be held on a level playing field with no biased officiating. This has NEVER happened before with Floyd in Vegas no one in all honesty can dispute that. Floyd has always had Vegas backing him up. No one can say in all honesty that both Joe Cortez & Kenny Bayless have protected Floyd by stopping his opponents from fighting their fight. It was BLATANT!!
If Floyd hadn't *****footed around the fight could have been made ages ago. I firmly believe Floyd STILL does not want to fight Manny, but is being pressured into it.
I hope for a good fair fight with the best man on the night legitimately getting the win. Should than man be Manny & as Floyd demanded no rematch clause, I hope Manny treats Floyd the same way Floyd treated him. MAKE HIM WAIT & JOIN THE LINE

Aww c'mon man C.J.Ross made the Canelo fight a draw & what happened?? She got FIRED!!! She had the audacity to vote against a Floyd win??? Tony Weekes called Maidana 1 straight down the middle. Floyd objected so in comes Kenny Bayless. Now no one can call that officiating unbiased. Even Floyd fans have said so. I cannot see any way Manny would get a close decision win. He needs to KO Floyd

Lets be fair tho c.j. Tony weeks did not call the first maidana fight down the middle. He let maidana away with pretty much everything. And i was on the couch shouting maidana on to win. The judges favouritsm is pretty baseless imo. They have actually down played floyd a good few times more so than the other way especially with the three fights mentioned above

Maidana got away with a knee ffs.

The judge who scored the Canelo bout a draw was rightfully fired.

Hopefully that sends out a message to other judges with abysmal scoring.

There is. If I recall correctly, in case of Pac winning, May gets a rematch. If May wins, no rematch is guaranteed.

If Pacquiao wins. He holds the cards for a potential rematch. And he may not do it in Vegas. I wouldn't be surprised if he made Floyd go to China for it

Vegas knows they are better off with Floyd on the A-side

I don't think Tony Weekes called the first fight perfectly, there were a few punches that hit Floyd in the back of the head, its possible from his position maybe he didn't see them clearly. When it came to the second fight, I honestly don't think Bayless was trying to protect Floyd. I have a lot of respect for the man and he generally does well officiating so I want to give him the benefit of the doubt. I think the problem with the second fight is Floyd got into his head because he questioned how Weekes called the first fight and because Bayless didn't want to make that same mistake, he ended up doing the opposite.

Although I think both Weekes and Bayless are very capable referees, I don't think either should officiate the Mayweather-Pacquiao fight, mainly because people are already questioning them. Although its unfortunate we have to question the possibility that the ref would favor one fighter over the other, it's best that they get a referee that was never accused of favoring one of the fighters.
