Would things have played out differently with Schaefer around? Like yourself, I'm surprised at Oscar's actions. Of course he wants to protect his biggest asset. That's fine. But Canelo's rep has taken a huge hit. And it all could have been avoided. All Oscar had to do to prevent the above, was simple: Relinquish the belt after the Cotto fight, with a statement that said Canelo wasn't ready for MW at this stage, but the opportunity to fight Cotto was simply too good to pass up. That's how simple it was. Nobody would have criticised either of them for that.
Canelo's ppv numbers should take a hit if he's got nobody good to fight. Meanwhile, Golovkin's ppv numbers can only go up as he hunts Saunders, Jacobs, etc. When Canelo runs out of suckers to fight, he'll need Golovkin as much as Golovkin needs him and maybe they'll make a fair offer then.
I respect this opinion. But as per my previous post, all he had to do was to get Canelo to relinquish the belt after the Cotto fight. That would have been better than pretending to want to fight GG and asking for a voluntary against Khan etc.
