Open Scorecards...Good idea...bad idea??

Oh yeh, I've thought about it. But I've also thought about every other sport in the world where scoring isn't hidden, and they get along fine - plenty better than boxing, actually.

You did say the one station in America tried it for how long I don't know, but it doesn't sound like a definitive result in whether open scoring works or not.

Boxing is the best sport in the world and whether scores are hidden or open isn't going to change that.
Although on the state of the sport, I do think it'd help boxing's popularity if you could watch a fight and be aware of who is actually winning before 5 minutes after the fights over. It's bizarre.

 

Its wasn't for long, they were only looking at it from a spectacle point of view. It didn't make good TV so it got knocked on the head pretty quickly, just a couple of fights IIRC.

They have open scoring in amateur boxing and still have bad decisions and its gone a long way to making the sport and damn site less enjoyable than it was 10 years ago.

 

I don't know about that, the general public seemed to like watching Khan and Degale at the olympics. I'm not saying it's because the score was on the screen but I think it makes boxing more watchable if you're not familiar with the sport.

 

It drives me nuts!!! You get loads of "why didn't THAT punch score" type questions.

Er, never. I don't need to see the scores to know who's winning a fight. If it's close then I'll look forward to the MC making the announcement.

Showing scores during a fight is simply not required.

In a hometown robbery scenario where you think you're winning, you realise you aren't and can at least decide to go for broke on the KO.

Actually you DO need the scores to know who's winning a fight. Opinion is anther thing.

If you like the part of boxing where you wait to hear the MC announce the winner, you must love Big Brother and the X Factor, they do the same thing. My favourite part of boxing is the sport.

 

Bad idea. Any trainer worth his salt knows what the true siuation is anyways.

 

When the final scores are announced, they always tally up with how I scored it, so I am confident that I know who is winning a fight.

Boxing has nothing to do with X Factor or Big Brother.

Anyway, what's wrong with a bit of suspense at the end of a fight? If we didn't like surprises then we wouldn't bother watching fights in the first place.

If fact, let's do away with championship fights altogether. Let's just give the belt to the fighter with the "best" record on Boxrec and be done with it.

i dont like them, it changes the outcome of a fight and maybe even changes the way a fighter fights if he already knows he is wel ahead for instance, i dont like the idea at all
