I heard they're eligible this year. I can see Hamed getting in but would prefer Curry not just because I'm a fan of him.
Hamed did quite a bit. He unified, was successful over more than one weightclass and most importantly brought attention to the lower weightclasses. And with this attention the money came. This makes him deserving of a place in the HoF IMO.
Pretty good responses so far. Don't have much to say about Hamed as y'all broke it down quite well. Curry, don't know he can get in but he's an interesting pick.
Fair comment. He did own the featherweight division brutally for about 5 years. His ring entrances and KO record made the money come in. Small men get big purses today because of Naseem Hamed i suppose
I've been singing myself hoarse with this same tune for years now, but Curry and Archer are both very much overdue. They both belong in there ahead of Hamed.
Curry became the dominant Welter Champ over a good group of contenders after SRL & Hearns moved up. He hung around down at 147 too long, plus some bad management decisions, and never really fulfilled his true potential. Too bad the SRL or Hagler megafights never came off. He is on the cusp.
This is way too soon for either with the slate of competing nominees currently on the table. Don Curry had a career grand total of seven successful title defenses. He didn't even reach double figures as a defending champion. The way he got dethroned by Honeyghan, and especially Jacquot, is damning. Getting starched with a single shot by McCallum doesn't help either. He had some bad defeats when the weight draining compromises of making 147 did not apply. Has one less win and the same number of knockout defeats as brother Bruce, who would have been the first man to defeat Benitez if scoring had been done on a points basis instead of rounds. A win over Benitez would have arguably been better than any single conquest on Don's record. (Bruce also went out a winner, unlike his kid brother.)
this is the prince's true legacy actually, he set everything in motion at FW imo both curry and hamed are good candidates, but when guys like Tyson and Chavez are in the running they might have to wait
Def. Hamed. Curry's career fizzled out pretty quick, but he was insanely dominant at 147 for about 2.5 years.
Hamed did enough and so did Curry. Curry was dominant in a very during a time where there were very good WW's. He did die out quickly, but he was still a good fighter up until he was ko'd by McCallum, which there is no shame in. Barry M. got in with less credentials.
