Well, basically, what the classic posters think about Calderon ? How good was he ? I really liked to watch him and though his opposition is very obscure and not good, his performances were always beautiful to watch IMO. Do you rate him in a p4p sense ? Or he was just a very good fighter at a weak weight....... This content is protected
that sums up my opinion perfectly, segura was all wrong for him but he still looked good at points in those fights
You know how I feel. Quality operator but if he'd been around when those weights were crammed with talent he'd be lucky to be on the level of Alfonso Lopez (and I'm talking post-Oguma, erratic Lopez). And sadly for the Puerto Rican he faced his very best opponents when he was fading himself (Cazares, Mayol, Segura) Loved Iron Boy, don't get me wrong, IMO he proved more about himself in the first fight with Segura than any of his 120-108 schoolings. I've never rated Cazares as well but fair play to Calderon for essentially being a natural straw and even surviving against 'natural' bantamweights.
In his time, I cannot even rate him p4p past guys like Miguel Cotto, who I consider a borderline great, at best. But, if you want to include him as a borderline great type, I'm not going to argue with it, on the basis that I rate consistent excellence and he had that for a long time. Although I was never a big fan, it's plain to see he was a terrific talent. And, despite his era, I do rate the fact that nobody in the world was taking his position at the top, for an impressive amount of time and defences. A division, to me, really can't be so bad as to not at least be impressed by nobody in the world proving able to kick you off the top of the hill.
