Thanks for the input McGrain. I've admittedly only seen one Mijares fight (vs Alexander Munoz). Decent effort, I wasn't blown away but he's worth another look. You already turned me on to Roman Gonzalez. He reminds me of some kind of Arguello/Chavez hybrid and I got my eye on him.
That's just effin hillarious. I didn't realize asero got off Pac's knob enough to over hype anyone else.
I have always thought he was overrated off the Darchinyan result and really fought nobodies since then. However, he is an impressive fighter, a physical marvel, solid if not spectacular technical skills. However, my main issue with him is that he dosent really know what he wants to be, he boxes when he should punch, punch when he should box and turns southpaw inexplicitly. A marvel none the less. I like McGrains description of his wide variety of shots. I was very impressed when he blew away Sidorenko, who I had down as a very tough and capable operator that I thought Donaire would widely out point. Not seen too much of him. I have not seen that much either. I do think he is a textbook sort of fighter though. I love his sharp and hard counter-punching, like the left hook he caught Hasegawa with. He sort of reminds me of an old veteran who can box and think and picks his shots. I agree he struggles with Donaire. Lovely fighter to watch. A sort of southpaw speedster. He uses his speed and southpaw stance to get off first with scathing attacks. Personally I feel he has become slightly more well rounded as his display against Burgos showed, he could counterpunch and mix it up. With his speed and precision he is a very very tricky task for anyone around today. I like him. Lovely pure boxer back a year ago or so, he has become much more defensive recently (although the Segura fight disproves that, although I'm discounting that). At his best he had a really good grasp of angles which is very nice to see and watch, as he set up attacks off angles and also moved away off angles superbly. Not seen too much of him either. A guy I'm pretty high on is Anselmo Moreno, WBA Bantamweight champ. I know he ain't no ATG or anything but he is a very capable Panamanian style defensive wizard. A tall gangly southpaw with superb defence, a good jab but often under-throws. Sound familiar? Although he aint as good as the equally lazy Zapata. I do love Moreno's use of back foot angles and lateral movement, as well as his intuitive head and body movement. Also I agree with McGrain, Gonzalez is the best of the lot, and McGrains article (or should I say scientific journal on him) is a must read.
Cheers man. I favour Donaire against Montiel too for what it's worth with Montiel being a dangerously live underdog.
You know who i hope wins this new BW tournament? Mr. Abner Mares. I'm looking forward to what he does. I really wanted to see a Montiel-Hasegawa II. Sadly weight? robbed me of that one.
McGrain do you have the link for it, I want to read it again. I also think Mares wins the Bantamweight tournament, I actually think he looks a good wee fighter.
Please post that in this thread if that's cool. I'd like to check it out, or else where is it located? I'll have to look in to Mares, haven't seen him yet, but he got two shouts on this thread. I have a hunch about Donaire. I'm not putting him in this league by any means, but I have a hunch he has a Sanchez-like abillity to rise to the level necessary for the task at hand. The Hasegawa comparison to Watanabe and Gushiken, even if it's a poor man's version, is enough for me to check him out.
I honestly thought he got robbed of a deserved win versus Perez the first time around. Granted, he slacked in the middle rounds but he didn't lose them, and he definitely won the early and late game. I expect to see Mares-Donaire for the Ring belt relatively soon. That will be a FotY contender. As for Gonzalez, I wanna see him against better matched comp before I commit to thinking him of a p4p great fighter. He does have a great chance against Segura which would be an epic pressure fighting contest. They should move him along very quickly.
