Opinion on style makings of a Boxer

Discussion in 'Boxing Training' started by thejokerswild, Sep 25, 2009.

  1. When starting out a successful career in boxing,

Do you think it's important to conform and focus a fighters training on perfecting and executing one orthodox style

    or

Do you think it's important for a fighter mix it up and consume their energy executing many styles.

Example- You'd wouldn't really see Holmes fighting in the pocket or see Tyson and Frazier fighting on the back foot. Floyd initiating a brawl or aggressive attack.

But then again you don't really see Toney, Hatton, Holyfield, Mosley execute a heavily focused orthodox style. They can fight in many areas.

What are your opinions and experiences?

Train hard and see what works for you.

Although I am of the opinion that you should always train every aspect of boxing.

Make an A out of your B, and C out of your D.

So if you are for instance very strong but not so fast by nature, do a lot of strength training and bag work to develop your punching power. But also train the proper technique for speed so you can hang in there whit the fast and agile guys. That way they will probably still be able to outbox you, but not in a way they can dominate you. You on the otherhand might be able to dominate them whit your power.

The same goes the otherway around tough.

Not an expert hear but in my opinion.
I would teach the basics at first. If I was a trainer. I would not insest that they stick to them if they felt more comfortable with their own style. However the basics are very good to have at your desposial even if you are extremly gifted and talented. If you are not a natural boxing talent or gofted athlete than the basics are going to take you farther than any other method in my opinion.

which ever the fighter feels more comfortable in. But you have to make them perfect there style they choose. Like jermaine Taylor if hes going to keep his left hand down, I would make him learn a shoulder roll or make him stop standing flat footed. That style is a disaster if you run across someone with a good jab.
