The first solid blow by Dempsey to a vital area of the body or head ends the fight. You have one of the most viscous punchers in hwt boxing history in the ring wearing 5 oz gloves mind you with a middleweight. Can’t end well for Greb.

He had plenty of time in Barton Harbor to land a solid blow but got a schooling instead. And a bloody lip, to boot.

Whilst I completely agree that Dempsey should win and would be favoured to, Greb was far more durable than Spinks and Dempsey was far from Mike Tyson.

I agreed with everything else I just think Greb's chin holds up longer than George Carpenter's does.

    Seamust stretching the truth again.

Sparring is not a real bout.

Sparring entails using training gloves that muffle punching power.

In a real bout any middleweight runs the risk of being seriously injured fighting prime Dempsey. Think Monzon vs Foreman, SRR vs Louis, Hopkins vs Lewis. It’s no different and the outcome just as sure.

Oh, but I was told by those who know better that Dempsey was a SAVAGE in sparring and held back nothing at all. Yet I can quote numerous accounts of the Benton Harbor sparring sessions stating that Greb OWNED Dempsey, that Dempsey got frustrated and ended up bloodied and swinging at air.

Any middleweight gets seriously injured by fighting Dempsey? How about Tommy Gibbons, a guy who made middle and a guy that Greb wiped the floor with in a supposed Heavyweight Title Elimination bout? Against Gibbons, Dempsey resorted to uncounted low blows while his ex-roomie James Daugherty, the ref, looked the other way. Still, Gibbons walked away with nothing but a sore set of nuts. Not exactly seriously injured.

And remember, Greb beat Brennan like a red-headed step child, beat Miske, beat Gibbons, beat Tunney into a week in the hospital.... Yet, Dempsey would have beaten him with the first meaningful blow?

Sparring sessions entail sparring gloves that mute punching power. Learn to read.

Gibbons was 175.50 lbs when he fought Dempsey and he had to fight a completely defensive cover up and pray style to last the distance.

Greb would have weighed no more than 165 pounds soaking wet, a middleweight, and he would not be fighting in a shell as did Gibbons.

Yes. The first solid blow from Dempsey ends the fight.

I don't think so, I think Dempsey's power would have gotten to Greb eventually

Was Greb really "FAR" more durable though? I mean, if you take out the Tyson fight, Spinks never even hit the canvas in his career and he fought a very solid selection of fighters.

    Yes.

Read up on Greb. 300 fights and only stopped twice, once as a kid and the other by an injury. He was a walk forward pressure fighter who went 20 rounds 3 times and 15 rounds multiple times a month sometimes. The guy was a tank.

Greb is gonna come to him even with a tight defense I think Dempsey would have to many chances catch him clean.
Jack is one of the great powerpunchers in history. He hurt everyone he hit.
    Dempsey By stoppage.

Greb was known as being unusually hard to hit for his style.

Yep. Some of Dempsey's sparring were straight up bouts, including with Greb, which happened 3 times. Pretty sure Rickard actually had to stop the sparring, and large crowds gathered to watch.

'Dempsey tackled Bill Tate, Harry Greb and Marty Farrell this afternoon. He took them on in that order, boxing two rounds with Tate and three each with Greb and Farrell. The bout with Greb was a real one. It was the best work-out Dempsey has had. The Pittsburgher was in prime shape, and although he weighs only 165 pounds he gave the champion a real honust-to-goodness battle. Dempsey hasn't seen so many gloves in a long time as Greb showed him. Greb was all over him and kept forcing him around the ring throughout the session. Dempsey could do but little with the speedy light heavyweight, while Greb seemed to be able to hit Dempsey almost at will. Time and again Greb made the champion miss with his famous right and left hooks to the head and countered with heavy swings to the head and hooks to the body.'
