I wonder if, after Dempsey knocked that guy out, he described being in the ring with Dempsey like "being in a glove factory?"

    Gotta go.

I’m not getting what Double is trying to elucidate.

Greb was a middleweight. There is not a single middleweight who ever existed anyone on these boards would say lasts a round with a Tyson, Marciano, Foreman, Louis. Yet Greb because in a sparring session with big gloves gave a good account of himself he stands to last or beat Dempsey one of the most destructive, quick punchers in boxing history in a real fight?

Remember Jack Sharkey a 205 pound hwt champions comments:

“I never thought anyone could hit that hard”

“When Dempsey hits you on the shoulder he breaks your shoulder. When he hits you to the body it feels as if his fist is coming out your back. When he hits you on the hip he dislocated your hip.”

Those same blows singularly take any middleweight OUT.

And to those who think Dempsey got stronger as the rounds went on, that in fact was Greb's forte, picking up his output and sitting on his punches. Ask Bill Brennan.

Dempsey would need to lay some early bodywork and play the long game to slow Greb.

I think the cliche “who needs him” was probably invented for Greb!

I agree agree with the overall point but Greb was imo a better MW than all of them and Dempsey was worse than all of them

This thread should've had one response and ended. Of course he COULD'VE beaten Dempsey, anything is possible, I just doubt he would've.

Could someone tell me what in the heck Double is writing about? Gibberish.

Dempsey knocked sparring partners senseless at times. You can read reports about it here and there but what’s your point?

The footage you posted was Dempsey sparring Big Bill Tate. This clip has been used for decades to show Dempsey’s ability to slip and counter. Tate is trying to hit Dempsey but having a hard time doing so and in between Dempsey lands counter punches.

You have a very difficult time expressing your ideas. You make no sense whatsoever.

Because youve just seen soooo much footage of Dempsey. Dempsey was always knocking out and injuring sparring partners in the ring Jamaica Kid was knocked out and refused to spar with him anymore. Jack Levin was knocked out and kicked out of camp. He knocked out Paul Gallico who wanted to see what it was like to spar with the champ. Leo Houck took a beating and refused to spar with Dempsey anymore. Soldier Riley was knocked out in less than a round and left camp. He knocked out a bantamweight whose name escapes me in the same training camp at Van Kelton Stadium that Greb first sparred Dempsey, In fact the stories about Dempsey being unable to pull his punches in sparring and exhibitions are legion so the idea you are trying to put forth that Dempsey took it easy on Greb in sparring simply doesnt jive with reality. He knocked out a bantamweight and two guys who had never boxer before but hes taking it easy on Greb who was kicking his ass. Ok... But youre an expert so...

Excellent comments about, I agree fully with dubblechin, Dempsey also was very fast, good defensively and really a CW by today's standards in most of his career, and Greb had not power at all to make Dempsey think twice about doing any and everything he wanted to and he would have, he would have wanted this one to end in big fashion by KO and as fast as possible to show everyone who he was.

Jack does a 160 pound body some serious harm. Greb gets hurt and he stays hurt even if he keeps coming. It would be only a matter of time before his body in unable to sustain the damage that would be continuously ploughed into him.
Jack tko victory. You need size and physicality to compete with the Jack and Frazierz of the world. Otherwise it end up looking like Johnson v Ketchel.
