he is a very good coach and wrote a very good book on boxing. won a world championship at a time of firce competition also a great guy; the whole cokes family are wonderful people
My National Guard C.O. was his manager. He told me Cokes was suppose to fight Nino Benvenuti but the fight never came off.
Cokes was a first-rate, smooth boxer-puncher. If you wanna treat, view "FAT CITY". Cokes played a lead role as a trainer in the film. It wasn't just boxing scenes. He had some very moving, funny moments as an actor. He didn't win, but I think he was nominated for an Oscar for best supporting actor that year.
Rubin Carter when he was on his "run", was a "bad" middleweight. Cokes was a very good welterweight, and never really put on the weight to be full-fledged MW.....more like Jr MW max. So I would have to say Carter would probably have won in about 9 rounds.
