Who favors a wide stance? I know I do. I know the 'fundemental' way is feet roughly shoulder width. I know you tend to see a difference between European fighters and Cuban fighters when it comes to feet placement. I always felt I can sit down on my punches easier, it make my steps shorter- thus aiding balance, and oddly it keeps me from overreaching. And when I say 'Wide' a mean about a step wider, not crazy-wide.
Are you the pressure giver or receiver? Taking this CONSTRUCTIVELY knowing I am saying this not seeing your balance and movement, I think if you were actually being pressured you might find it a bit harder to advocate having your feet wider than usual. A "normal" stance allows for greater efficiency of movement. Also, if the opponent has fleet feet, he can be on top of you and your only recourse is to straighten up or lean at the waist. Where as the opposite is to get low and slide the rear foot. Again, I have not seen your stance so can't really judge.
sometimes i have trouble with a guy who has a wide stance he fights weird but i have to try and walk him down )
If your tall then ı would say ıt benıfıts you, as you can catch your opponent when he over steps tryıng to get to you, but, ıf your smaller than 50% of the people you box then ıts sılly because you cant get to them well. As stated above, if you are good mover then you might get away with your footwork, other than that you'll struggleç
the only guy ive sparred with a wide stance uses a a cross armed / philly shell constantly covering the body therefore making it extremely difficult to hit his mid section , hes also a powerful puncher so i was always on the back foot and with his head movement i found it hard to land on him , this is my only experience fighting a guy with a wide stance , unless your defense is pretty good i wouldnt recommend it your just making yourself a bigger target
I naturally find i have quite a wide stance but my coach has been pushing for me to put my legs closer together and im finding myself alot more mobile in the ring and ive noticed improvements in most departments.
I really don't like the wide stance to fight from, I lose balance more easily (I am an in and out type swarmer, rely heavily on my foot speed when I spar bigger guys to just not be there when they try to counter). I keep them shoulder or just a little bit wider, but my thighs are far and away the weakest muscle group I have (calves immensely conditioned, stay up on my tip toes all night, generate power from my upper torso and my forward momentum when I push off). I think if you could move and stay flat footed the wide stance might work, but I need to be up on my toes to move or I almost hyperextend everything and will be extremely likely to teeter forward when I try to slip or duck ... but I bet if you have strong pernell whitaker type legs and can crouch easily you could get away with any stance you want.
