What do you guys think of Andre Ward? Where does he rank among the great SMW?
Just got done watching Ward vs. Dawson and I'm very impressed with Andre Ward overall. Such a skilled, versatile fighter along with a great personality. He's proven that he's one of the best right now.

    Sloppy, but effective.

He has an unattractive style and his punches aren't very accurate. He smothers his work with his lack of distance management.

Again, he's effective, so you can't knock it, but it isn't pretty.

He's been the best fighter in the world for a few years now, ability wise.

I don't think he's anything super special, more of a Buddy McGirt level fighter perhaps, but hey, that's what the world has to offer right now.

I'm a fan of his but I'd like to see him venture out of his backyard to test himself more.

If Martinez beats CHavez they should catch weight and Ward should beat his ass down.

I think he's overrated. He's probably one of the best P4P right now, but nothing more than that.

I saw the fight and I can't put a handle on the fight...Andre Ward is terrific, or Dawson having to go down to 168 pounds looked weakened making the weight...Ward OUTCLASSED Dawson in this bout...Ward looks like and reminds me of the Welterweight of a few years back Buddy McGirt...Both sly and celebral...
P.S. I watching the bout, was bothered by the white gloves the fighters wore...They looked as big as pillows...Just my observation...In the 1940s a fighter weighing 168 pounds was a Lightheavyweight, and had to fight guys up to 175 pounds....Weight those days weren't as important...witness Billy Conn at 168 pounds for his fight with the murderous punching 200 pound Joe Louis...

Andre Ward is a cheater .

In addition he likes fighting exclusively in his hometown .

N over8ed fraud like his heroes Hopkins and Jones but unlike them at least he fought live opponents so I can give him d edge over them .

Ward's first pro fight was in December of 2004.

On the way up the SMW ranks he beat the likes of Rubin Williams KO7, Henry Buchanan W12, and Edison Miranda W12.

He won the SMW Super 6 Tournament which started in late 2009 and ended in late 2011. He beat Mikkel Kessler WTD11, Alan Green W12, Arthur Abraham W12, and Carl Froch W12. Between his fights with Green and Abraham he beat Sakio Bika (W12) in a fight that was not part of the tournament.

Tonight he dominated Chad Dawson and stopped him in the 10th round. Yes, Dawson came down from LHW to fight at SMW... I'm sure many will say Dawson was weight drained. I will say this... Dawson did fight at MW and SMW in the past, his last SMW fight was over 6 years ago though. In some of his LHW fights he was as low as 172 Lbs.

Ward has won all of his fights decisively IMO.

How does he compare with the likes of Hearns, Benn, Eubank, RJJ, Calzaghe, and others? I still say too soon to tell.

He rates prety highly among the 168 pounders now, and I expect him to go up from here.

We are in the presence of a great fighter gentlemen.

My opinion is he just beat up a starving African suffering from malnutrition. He might have beat Dawson anyway but Dawson was very much drained and Ward had to stack the hand in his favour

Ward is a very good boxer though, very complete, high workrate, great stamina, great in fighter, fast (although not super fast). I don't like the way he slaps his punches though

Nobody forced Dawson to take the fight.

No but he took it because it was the only way to get a big fight and big money. Ward agreed to the fight aslong as there was a stacked the deck.

Ward's just played the draining tactic Leonard and Pacquaio have used and neither get massive props for the times they pulled that trick

At least Leonard didn't make Hagler come down to welterweight

So did Dawson take the fight because he thought he was going to loose?

No, SRL just waited for Hagler got old...

I haven't seen Ward-Dawson, but the bare result and the way the fight panned out looks similar to FMJ versus Corrales...any similarities?
