I see a lot of people saying that Tito wasn't much at 160, and was a blown-up WW. I don't think that's quite accurate, as he was a big guy for WW, and also had a great short run at 154. Trinidad had already started to fall in love a bit too much with his power (look at the Carr fight in 94' and then watch him in 00-01), but was still a guy with a lot of tools. Monster left hook, good straight right hand, heavy jab, picked punches well. Tito dominated the consensus #2 MW at the time in William Joppy. However, it was a pretty poor division. Joppy was a decent titleholder. Trinidad got dominated by Hopkins, but Hopkins is an ATG. Then there were his wins over Cherifi and Mayorga, and his awful performance against Winky. Overall, what are your opinions of Tito as a MW? While he was better at 147-154, he was still an excellent fighter and I would hesitate to pick against him against the MW champ of today in Sergio Martinez.
I love Tito, limited as he was. I see him as a very pure being in the ring. He follows his opponent around the ring and methodically puts out quality standard combinations. One-two, left hook, right hand. By round four his opponent can dream it but dread it as well. They are short, and they are snappy, and he is relentless. Against the best he will always come up short, at any weight. But if you lack discipline, stamina, focus, anything you would need to go twelve hard rounds, Trinidad will put you on your heels and likely finish you.
great fighter but just met a legendary fighter who put on his signature performance. good chin, great left hook, had great will to win. hopkins fight took a lot out of him i understand he is being inducted into the HOF along with calzaghe and de la hoya. bernard hopkins said he is going to be there.
Joppy is his only real noteworthy MW win. Joppy as mentioned was just decent, a top contender in a than barren division. Mayorga doesn't really count as a MW opponent as that was his only MW fight to my knowledge. Like Tito, he mostly hung around Welter and Light MW himself. I think like Oscar, he may have came in as a MW and had height, still had his great punching ability but really a small framed guy without physical power. Hopkins bullied him with ease.
