I recently saw this on YOutube, thought Norton edged it in the last round, but probably a draw would have been the best verdict.Thought Norton took most of the first part of the fight, Young the second, but neither one had an overwhelming advantage.
This was the fight off which Norton was awarded retroactively the WBC title after Ali refused to fight Norton again.
We all had it close, I had it by one pt for Young. I was impressed how Jimmy sat down on his right hand in this bout, it had some pop in it.
I had it for Young by a hair although it could've gone either way. One thing that surprised me was how Young seemed to shake Norton with some well placed shots. That seemed to put Ken on the defensive more than I thought he should've been. Norton seeemed content to bang to the body after that instead of trying to go to Young's jaw. At the time I thought Kenny would try to ko Young being the bigger stronger fighter but Young showed he had some pop in his punches that kept Norton honest. Good fight.
I scored it sometime last fall and gave it to Young by two points, but several rounds could have gone either way depending on what you like.
Even though it was a close bout, there was never any discussions of a rematch. Anyone following the sport back then lived through some strange goings on with the heavyweight title fights back then. How often do you see closely contested bouts by probably 2 of the top fighters in the division at the time & not have 1 iota of a chance for a rematch? And at the same time, the other belt available in the division went to a guy with 8 fights--and 1 of those was a draw.
Very hard one to call. Only one point in it,imo. I could watch it today and give it to Ken,and Jimmy tomorrow.
