I'm very curious about Steve Robinson.I've heard people say he was very slick and strong boxer while others say he would just wear down his opponents through his strength. They say that Mcmillan was an injured boxer going into his bout with Robinson and if Mcmillan was 100% healthy he would have won. They say Hodskinson laid off for too long before facing Robinson. And some say Meckenzie wasn't in top form when he fought Robinson. Are these valid points or excuses because Robinson wasn't favored in these bouts?
i think he is an inspiratoin...his abilty to move jab slug and slick opponants was amazing...i feel he is a great british fighter with a high rating, who was a journeyman and advanced to a champion. he was just to open to get his his defence was good but he would get hit he didnt slug but he didnt box he did everything right but nothin special which is a shame becuase im sure he could of gone onto greeat things
I agree. The famous phone call during the middle of his mums pie and mash will live forever in british boxing folklore.
Yep, Steve Robinson's story is a great one. He's such a nice bloke too. I have no idea how the WBO sanctioned the bout against Davison because Robinson was a complete journyman and at 2 days notice. But that said, the transformation from Robinson the journeyman to Robinson the WBO champ was unbelievable. That belt was the making of Steve Robinson.
well it gave the wbo some credibility...before the champions didnt have long reigns and had few champions robinson was a long long riegning champion and foiught a damn good group of people...
Good champion and great for the WBO and the sport of boxing at the time. In the documentary tape I have, it said that he was the worlds highest paid featherweight. Frank Warren and the WBO ending the success when he was forced to fight Hamed in Cardiff. Wasn't it Hameds' first fight at Featherweight? I wonder if we will be saying the same thing about Gavin Rees in a few years.
I watched the Robinson-Davison fight on the telly, quite something to see him knock Davison about like that. That he went on to defend his title so many times was even more surprising, it is an inspirational story and one I always think of when we get these 'last minute challenger' types. I've never seen Robinson-Hamed though.
it was a good fight but hamed was too quick agile and and just made the pure boxer do things to catch him which left openings...typical hamed win to unorthodox for the orthodox fighter.robinson won some rounds with his left right left right walking combo but hamed was by far the classier fighter that night
that was one of Hameds best performances I am pretty sure there are highlights of it on youtube....worth watching.
Fair play to Steve Robinson, seem's to be a great bloke full of heart. Remember John Davison was a hard and excellent boxer another guy who could have went even further.
One of my favourites. Tons of heart, I was at that fight when N*Z tormented him and showed no class. That's what really put me off the *****
