That would be a good solid start - they really need a big year In 2024, the pressure is on, let's hope they respond with more shows like this
Okolie headlined two shows and both fights were shocking He has never been a genuine headliner with no stats to prove he genuinely could be moving forwards The second one on a Sunday only had a crowd due to the Poles turning up
It doesn’t matter. It was a good decision from Boxxer as they could do a round robin with Okolie, Riakporhe and Billam-Smith. Ben Shalom needed headliners and Okolie was one who he could match with other domestic cruiserweights at world level.
Well I don’t know what they were paying Okolie but they got their guy Billam-Smith a world title. They made a stadium fight and got Okolie to headline two shows inside 2 months. Not a bad thing at all as Billam-Smith who is now world champion is a regular headliner who can sell a lot of tickets unlike Okolie. I don’t agree with a lot of Boxxer’s decisions but at the end of the day they needed people to headline shows. They can continue making fights between Billam-Smith, Riakporhe, Okolie and Chamberlain now too.
So all in all it's not really gone too well bar Billam Smith Shalom opted to go all in at a division that historically makes little money(fighters move on up for this very reason) He has since made a pigs ear of it The beginning of that was signing Okolie and reportedly blowing a huge chunk of his budget on him
To be fair I think there's been positives and negatives. He got a big show (and the WBO) out of CBS-Okolie, and two decent headliners (CBS-Chamberlain, CBS-Masternak); should he get through this, CBS-Riakporhe is another big regular Sky fight. Obviously Okolie's been a disaster on a personal level, and any ambitions they had of sticking Okolie-Riakporhe in a stadium or on PPV aren't going to materialise. If they can get Chamberlain-Riley made that's a good headliner (possibly even Copper Box) or chief support to a bigger London card. Viddal has a good backing amongst the younger gen.
Lawrence Okolie was gonna be 'the face of Sky Boxing'. And their most pushed prospect is Adam 'Bang Average' Azim. That tells you everything.
Ben Shalom couldn't have done a worse job. It's an absolute shambles. Look at who he's signed, most of the prospects he signed got beat and exposed very quickly, he's bizarrely signed a lot of fighters on very short term deals, he's puling out of purse bids at the last minute, and he's focused far too much on Womens boxing. It'd be a tragedy if Sky pull boxing, all because of this woke novice who doesn't have a clue what he's doing.
Well when Okolie, Buatsi, Liam Smith, Billam-Smith and Mckinson left Matchroom to join Boxxer, apparently Matchroom were going to be in deep trouble and a lot of other fighters were going to leave Matchroom to join Boxxer.
