My only knock against Canizales is that he didn't unify the belts while he was around. I think he could have easily done it.

Thanks for the vid McGrain, clearly one of the most underrated champions to have boxed. Besides his great boxing aility, one thing that always made me think highly of the way he kept on his man when he hurt him, not sure if it wa pure finishing skills or sheer determination to see it out, maybe a mixture of both. If his opponent was hurt but still managed to weather a storm he didn't get discouraged and didn't let them slide out of danger, ie cut off the ring well, probably made easier for him because of his very good and technically profficient footwork

I hadn't seen much of Canizales, perhaps one highlight, until about a month ago. I didn't know who I was watching but I knew he must have been one of the greats - it was obvious in the way he moved and how comfortable he was in the ring.

I can remember Canizales coming to my hometown to defend his title against Billy Hardy. It was a measure of Hardy that he gave Canizales probably the fight of his life before going down on a split decision, many people thought Hardy had won.It was so close that they gave Billy a rematch in Texas, but Orlando showed his class and despatched Hardy in I think 8 rounds.Canizales was a class act,and Billy Hardy should be proud of himself that he took such a great champion all the way.

Canizales was good but his resume is nothing special.

I thought Hardy won too. Even though throughout the bout I felt he was hanging in there with a much better fighter, at the end I thought he did enough (hence the return bout). The rematch was horrible. When Billy went down he crumpled like Johnny Owen and I feared the worst initially. Canizales reminded me of a an old throwback the way he operated, great pressure applied, a natural fighter.

Canizalez-Lora would have been such a treat.

Who do you like in that one Mante?

Also, how do you see a fight between Davila and Canizales going?

I'm not sure about Lora Canizales.Really tough one to break down best against best.I've watched Lora's first fight with Davila in columbia a couple of times recently and it's one of the best defensive masterclasses i've watched.Davila landed about 2 good punches all fight and he's a guy who would usually have a good style to score on defensive minded fighters. That Lora against the best Canizales would be a helluva fight.

I actually thnk Davila would do really well against orlando, he's the kind of fighter that could take advantage of Canizales tendency to be a bit flat adn go thorugh the motions at times.

He doesn't have the big firepower or physical tools that would make canizales stand up and take notice early. His great accuracy and very sound tchnical skills could see him score well and make things extremely close if Canizales isn't on point.Orlando is a well balanced precision fighter who isn't going to shut down Davila with one or two extreme talents like the size and power of zarate or defence of Lora.

I could see Canizales moving around, picking his spots, taking it easy etc...while davila is more focused, stalks and scores with his great jab and short combo's..Then at the end while Canizales may have had the bigger rounds\looked hte more talented, it's ended up a close hard to score fight.

More often than not though, Canizales' greater physical ability and overall skills are probably going to give him the edge needed to win.I couldn't see him losing a series of fights, but there might be a hardy-esque performance in there initially.

Then at the end of the fight Ruben Castillo would claim Davila had won a shutout.

I think you've got it spot on regarding the first fight,Billy was hanging in there but at bantamweight he was a tough little so and so and he managed to give Canizales an extremely uncomfortable evening. Also i think the fact there were a couple of thousand screaming Mackems breathing down Canizales' throat probably helped Billy's cause also!
The return was an outdoor venue in the blazing heat in Texas,so apart from a helluva champion across the ring that didn't help Billy. The thing is after a nightmare start being badly decked a couple of times in the first few rounds,he recovered quite well and did ok or a few rounds, but he was caught again i think in the 8th. Canizales was just too good.

Actually the Gonzalez Knock out was a rematch. Gonzalez won the initial fight by UD.
Personally as good as Orlando was, I preferred Gaby with his wide open swinging style. Check out his detruction of Richard Sandoval. Great fight!
