I got to thinking about this fight a couple of weeks back when GPater mounted a thread about great one-handed displays. This is not a one handed display - Canizales uses the right hand sparingly but judiciously - but it might be was absolutley superb left-hand work. Canizales dominates with his jab, uses the hook to both lead and counter and is throwing those punches accurately. Little more work downstairs and i'd call it a masterclass. I got to thinking about it again when Popkins put up his "most highly skilled boxing match" thread, because in my opinion, this is Canizales at his rare best. I guess most of you guys will disagree with me and there are definitely more celebrated Orlando performances, so i'll agree that it's probbaly just struck a chord with me, but you can't go changing your opinions just because of someone elses. Anyway, the fight. Two things always strike me about this fight. The first is the way Minus looks, in the first two rounds, like a first class slickster, great footwork, smooth head movement, circling, doing all of the right things and how from the third round on, all of that is taken away from him. He still looks pretty good, but it's like he's had a whole class taken away from him. In my opinion, this is because Canizales has read him, has come to terms with how he moves and has found his proper range. Minus still manages to make him miss and even has success of his own, but from the third round on it's a systematic dismantling of the incumbent Commonwealth champion. Canizales has a formbidale weapon in reserve, and when he lets the right hand go Minues knows he has been spoken to. I still enjoy Ray's work. He's slick and experienced and he dug deep into his bag of veterans tricks to stay alive and that's rewarding viewing, but I started to feel sorry for him in round six, and at the end of that round he looks lost - but still game. Anyway I could rabbit on about this one all day long. Here's one of my favourite fights belonging to one of my favourite fighters. I've just watched a 4 disk Canizales career set and this bout isnt on it. Will have to check this fight out sometime.
Yeah, i think this is Canizales at or near his best as well.Perfect balance. I don't think Minus was much of a fighter, though he had nice hand and footspeed, but at least he tried to fight here.His display against Lora was appalling, made even worse by Lora being happy to do little when Minus offered nothing.
Watched the second Hardy fight today. Its a great fight, Canizales looks punch perfect at the start and is really rocking Billy, but Billy starts coming on abit then out of nowhere gest sparked. Great fight.
The thing about Canizales is, he finds it really really easy for him to control the fight, whether he's coming forwards or going backwards, it's because that's what he wants to be doing. Against Hardy, you can see him change gear and decide to motor forwards, he tucks up his shoulders a bit, takes a dancing half step inside and Hardy doesn't like it one little bit, sticks out this tentative little jab and then runs off...Canizales is right after him. Billy didn't make the adjustment; he didn't understand he was to stay on the move until Canizales was ready to box again, so when Orlando came all the way inside, he wasn't prepared and didn't adjust, result, ****ing unconcsious.
