Orlando Canizales used to be the head-to-head favourite on the forum - along with Roy Jones and Ken Buchanan i'd say. They were given credit for their ability in excess to their resumes (not a dig at any of their resumes). Anyway, while people don't talk about bantamweights much any more I thought it would be interesting to see where the forum was on things. Canizales is a beautiful, smooth, combination puncher par excellence. He did have his struggles even in his prime - most notably against Billy Hardy when he visited the UK - but a great jaw and a good defence to go with that wonderful skill. Chucho on the other hand, did the business. He doesn't seem to impress people quite as much on the eye, but he beat Ruben Olivares, Rafael Herrera, Jose Medel and was in a cointoss with Lionel Rose. Who you got?
I honestly can't say I'm knowledgeable about either one of these fighters to split them in a fight seemingly this razor close. I know I'd certainly be tuning in to watch these, that's for certain.
Castillo sure got my attention back when I was a fledgling fight fan...first heard of him vs Lionel Rose...decking Rose in the 10th and losing a close decision, which Chucho heartily protested. Then when he fought Olivares, he was the man who snapped "the man's" great ko streak...he didn't even get decked vs Olivares, but supplied the trilogy's only kd's to boot. I admired the heck put of him, but really...he had horrible luck, with Olivares being the star,...kinda like Rodrigo Valdez's plight of having to share his era with Carlos Monzon. I would like to pick him here, but I feel that he'd be cursed again, shooting it out with the excellent Orlando Canizales, but it would be,...like all of Chucho's bouts, a bitterly fought contest to the very end. I bet Castillo would have decked Canizales en route to losing a close decision.
Sorry I can't contribute more. I don't want to bull**** and pretend I know what I'm talking about. I do have some fresh footage of Orlando however... This content is protected
Hi Russell!! You doing good today? I know you'll dig checking out Chucho Castillo...he was Olivares' greatest early (1969-1971) rival...the two of them fought a thrilling trilogy!
I'm ok, waiting on my girlfriend to arrive back from New Jersey! Chucho's resume blows my mind, one of those fighters I almost don't want to watch because I don't want reality to underwhelm compared to the ideas of him I already have in my head. It's weird...
One o' them that's hard to say for me. Canizales was that blend of deadly and highly aesthetically pleasing, the type who you think on his day might be good enough to tommy top any ******* but you're not quite sure because he never crossed swords with the best at his own best. And still managed to look pedestrian on occasion against not so good comp for whatever reason. Chucho on the other hand was a stone-cold great, came up the hard way and held his own with other great talents while not standing out per se. A really skilled, complete, no-nonsense boxer-technician with a hard edge to the finery. I thought he pipped Rose and beat Herrera in the rematch too. However much I admire Canizales and his feck mullet, he isn't due the respect that Chucho is for me. It mostly hinges on the unknowns around Canizales. Whether not he had the drive, ruthlessness and ability to hold form with his Duranesque potential against a great fighter like Castillo, or whether he didn't. He'd really have to **** or get off the pot, otherwise Castillo would probably outhustle him through being more seasoned against good/great opposition.
I've gone for Chucho and his experience, but it's made me need a poo that I know will be green. You do awesome fantasy fights Matt, now **** off. Chucho was better than Marco, Erik and Hwan Manwell btw.
