118 12 rounds best verrsion of Fenech versus the best version of Canizales. Flawless hard punching technician versus humanoid typhoon. Who ya got?
I think Fenech might have been the right kind of fighter to bring out the best in a young Canizales. He'd need to **** or get off the pot, so to say, rather than have that safety-zone and option of coasting along in 3rd gear for long stretches against so-so mthodical textbook sorts like Hardy, or various other undeserving challengers of limited ability. canizales certainly has the power, all-around skills and durability to matador and outpunch a young Fenech, but i'm not sure if he had the mental intensity to really commit to what would be needed. Interesting fight. Not seen Canizales mentioned on here for ages.
Figured it was better than another 18 pages of Dempsey. Both guys are head to head beasts thought it merited some consideration. And like you said if anyone was gonna make you fight all 3 minutes it was Fenech.
Canizales-Fenech would have been a great battle...each would have brought out the best of each other with canizales emerging the victor due to his greater skills...but he would have really had to earn it.
Not sure that Canizales was more skilled, though his combination punching was perfectly formed and certainly more aesthetically pleasing. Taking the Fenech of the first Shingaki fight I'd say he looked every bit as skilled as Canizales. We know how hard it would be to outpunch Fenech, but quality outboxers like Coffee and Richardson were caught up with eventually. I'll give Canizales anmassive edge and favour him to win if it's the dead at the weight Fenech of the McCrory fight, that wouldn't suffice against a fighter of Orlando's ability. This is going the distance. Could go either way for sure, both men had nigh on undentable beards. I'll roll with Fenech to be that but stronger and be able to push the pace more, though Orlando would be with him every step of the way. Gaby Vs Jeff would've been brilliant as well.
I think Fenech takes it. I'm always baffled by Canizales' high standing around here. Yes he was very skilled but his opposition was very weak. And Fenech was a beast he'd mug Canizales.
Oddly I might rate consistency over greater victories (up to a point of course). I think its more difficult to beat top 10 competition over a period of years than out is to win a few big fights. But that's not a hard and fast rule.
I agree to an extent but it'd have to be on a case by case basis. In this case it applies. Orlando>Gaby.
Didn't know this thread existed and lol at "i love the 80's" tag. No joke I was just looking at Canizales highlights(only a ko one was on yt but better than nothing) today and also look at a hardy fight and another of his fights a couple of years ago. Smooth boxer and idk why but reminds me a bit of Napoles. Fenech I have seen his first two fights with Nelson and Zaragosa but that's it. Apart from Nelson 2, he looked brilliant and has the perfect style to test OC as he liked to coast it seemed. I question Fenech's defense but never his will and insidefighting. IMO cunning brawler vs technician with decent/respectable power make the best fights. Lamotta/Robinson, Marquez/Barrera(barrera a brawler turned boxer but not my point), Valdez/Monzon, Marciano/Walcott & Charles etc.
:goodThanks for the mentions, will see those fights. Will also rewatch Seabrooks fights and any other mentioned Canizales fights that display his skill at a very high level.
You know the Napoles mention is perfect. He just doesn't have Mantequilla's speed or opposition but they both backed guys down and threw devastating combinations.
