Great combination puncher, and would often step from side to side to befuddle the opposition. Great foot work, and had power at 118lbs. Was the result of quite a few vicious-looking knockouts, especially the one against Jimmy Navarro. The same criticisms I see coming up with Orlando was that he fought down to the level of his opposition some times, and that's true. The competition at Bantamweight wasn't spectacular during his reign, and he didn't fight the likes of Vasquez or Jones when they are at their very best. Best wins? Kelvin Seabrooks, Billy Hardy, and maybe Gerardo Martinez? He actually lost to the two best fighters he ever fought, but above his best weight class and past his prime, and some scored the Vasquez fight for Orlando. I find it hard to cite the man's best wins because a lot of his opposition really wasn't up to much. Perhaps McGrain or Bujia could answer this question a bit better than I could.
Clarence "Bones" Adams was a pretty good win for him as well. You'll find lots of footage of him on Youtube because I believe he has a bit of a cult following due to his brilliant technical skills. I love the guy and love watching him, but I do think he gets slightly overrated. His level of competition wasn't the best. I'd rate him just below a couple of his predecessors in the 80's, Lupe Pintor and Jeff Chandler, but I'm sure you'll get other opinions arguing otherwise. Anyway, I'd highly recommend watching as much footage of him as you can get because he's truly one of the brilliant technicians to come around in the last 30 years.
Can't add much more to what's been said. All I know is that if you watch any of his fights at bantamweight you will like him (especially the Seabrooks fights). Its impossible not to.
It's probably one of my favourite moments in boxing. Absolutely ****ing class. Speaking of Canizales, you started that highlight video yet?
Indeed I have. There's so much footage I'm using from the first 2 Seabrooks fight...great performances.
Thanks. I was looking for a highlight for him but couldn't find one. I don't know much of the guy but will be seeing his fights soon. Any suggestions?
Ray Minus is his best performance IMO. This is a very good short sharp one. It never gets mentioned and he's bloody lethal in it. [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kX0Uk0P5c3I[/ame]
Good video I'll watch the rest of it later too. Canizales was picking off & blocking shots beautifully.
