Orlando Salido SD12 Vasyl Lomachekno. Will this be the best win of 2014?

How's it a setback? He's on the exact same career trajectory, only instead of defending against GRJ he'll be picking it up against GRJ. Real boxing fans know the deal with Salido (the weight, the ref, the enormity of the task, the SD loss) and casual boxing fans will see that he won a world title already in his 3rd pro bout (bogus paper title, but anyway). The only problem is with the casuals who care about that 0 and don't factor in the opposition. Lomachenko is still going to be unifying and beating guys like Rigo/Garcia/Gamboa/Donaire within his first 10 fights so I don't see where the problem is, it's great for boxing fans.

came in well over weight. that disqualifies it for me.

I hate that people are giving Lomachekno **** for taking tough fight in his second pro fight. I don't like how long it is taking people like gary russell jr. to fight anyone worth mentioning.

It diminished his hype a lot. Also, this fight may affect him negatively in the future in terms of confidence (a possibility) etc. and finally as you said, he no longer has that 0, he'll always have to carry this defeat and it's just an unneeded blot on his career. All of this could have been easily avoided IMO if he just had a few more tune-up fights.

I know I'm saying this in hindsight (although I think I said it before the fight as well as well) but it just wasn't a good idea IMO.

I think you've underrated Loma a bit, McGrain.

Your article on the other site made it sound like he had no business being in the ring with Salido and that his amateur experience was no match for Salido's many fights as a (mean-looking) pro.

The truth is, it was a VERY close fight, with many, including one judge, calling it for the Russian. Loma was never in trouble, but Salido barely managed to crawl over the finish line. Or was he carried over by Mr. Cole, whose ineptitude reached its peak in the final round.

Factor in that Sal missed weight and came in two full weight classes above Lomachenko (147 to 135), landed more low blows than legits, and that the ref was a complete disgrace, and you can't really draw too many conclusions about the wisdom of a great amateur facing a seasoned pro.

If they were to rematch, both at 126, with any half-competent ref somewhere other than Texas, I believe Vasyl would be the favourite again.

I would put a modest bet on a stoppage.

BTW, who did you finally settle on between Inoue and Hernandez ?

He was a split decision away against a welterweight from making history, it was definitely a good idea. Salido was the worst possible opponent and the most likely to defeat Lomachenko in his first 12 rounder, things went wrong but he didn't take any damage at all and was clearly the superior fighter. Lomachenko's confidence will only grow from that fight and as he beats the big names around his weight division the Salido fight will be seen with a bit of perspective that is lacking at the moment.
A dominant win over GRJ (which is what I'm sure will happen) will restore any hype that was lost.

    Lomachenko is Ukrainan, not Russian.

I briefly pondered that point as I typed and decided to check it out when I reached the end, but forgot.

A fairly serious error given current events in that part of the world.

Humble apologies to all Ukrainians.

BTW, dealt_with, you goofed in your post as well.

Laurence Cole won the fight for Salido, but most of Salido's punches were on the legs, hips, balls, hitting after the bell over and over again and Salido was hurt in the 12 round, was holding on for dear life. Cole did nothing, he should be suspended for life, this in not the only fight Cole has ruined.............

    Naw, that was Loma.

    It takes two to tango.

Loma allowed those fouls as Saildo allowed Loma to hug him half he night.
Loma is lucky that Saildo didn't use his head to open up a few cuts on his face. That was Loma's lack of Pro experience showing.

What do you think GRJ would've done in that situation with all his pro experience, and what opponent (equivalent to Salido) do you have to base that on?
