I've never had my jaw broken so I cant talk. I'm only an amateur and Victor Ortiz fights the elite at 147. However after seeing the fight, it left a bad taste in my mouth. Stopping a fight because you broke your jaw is understandable. I've had just a sore jaw before and its painful in sparring. The circumstances surrounding this fight influenced how you look at it. 1. Ortiz was fighting a last minute replacement that he was supposed to steamroll 2. Ortiz is of mexican herritage where quitting is simply not an option. 3. Ortiz realized Lopez was tough and wasn't intimidated by him which obviously discouraged him 4. Ortiz has a history of quitting in the maidana & floyd fights 5. If he won this fight he would of got a huge payday with canelo 6. He blatantly fouled Lopez with a dirty rabbit punch 7. There were two rounds left of a very competitive fight where ortiz was ahead on the scorecards 8. OK his jaws broke, he seems to avoid any conversation with his trainer, physically stands up to call the referee over to tell him "my jaw is broken" and the ref said do you want to stop it and Ortiz replied "YES! my jaw is broken!" like obviously I want you to stop it. Joe Frazier had been fighting basically blind in the last few rounds of the thrilla in manilla and begged Eddy Futch to let him continue and was bitter that they stopped the fight till the day he passed (RIP Smokin joe) Ali broke his jaw in the first round of the first norton fight and continued to hear the last bell Razor Ruddock as early as the second round broke his Jaw against Mike Tyson and went the distance. FIGHTING MIKE TYSON WITH A BROKEN JAW Obviously Ortiz isn't cut from this cloth, he's in exiting fights but just a lack of heart/guts/balls
I've never had my jaw broken, but I know people who have and they say its the worst pain they've ever experienced. There is no excusing the Maidana fight but I can forgive him for this fight because he was injured.
Fighters have quit for Waaaaaaay less, it's the stigma behind Ortiz. (Maidana fight, Floyd Headbutt incident Ect...) If a sore jaw hurts I can't imagine what a Broken jaw feels like. (Let alone getting hit repeatedly....)
I dont like Victor for being a dirty little bia*ch however isolating this one incident from anything else he has done i would say it is acceptable to quit with that type of an injury. Victor is no Ali 99% of the new generation fighters aren't like the old ones. old fighters used to fight for pride, new fighters fight for money, why would you put everything on the line when you have 10 million in your bank account... old fighters didn't have that.
