Ortiz to shock the world?

Everyone seems to think this a handpicked mismatch by Mayweather. After all, Mayweather has seemingly taken the easier route time and time again especially since his emergence into the welterweight division. Ortiz is a strong young lively opponent. But maybe the bottom line is he's far too open to beat Mayweather. That's the main criticism for Ortiz as a fighter and as an opponent in general. He's unproven and his defense is too porous. Mayweather sees this and will pick him off.

The bottom line is Ortiz is going to have take on some leather to win anyway. He can push forward and take Floyd's punches probably well enough because he doesn't punch like Maidana or Berto. I'm not advising him to eat punches, but if he can push Floyd back and work the body and combinations and impose his size on Floyd than I think he can make it a real contest. Floyd's said to have trouble with southpaws. Maybe this is overblown, but maybe his shoulder roll defense is less effective against a southpaw. It's said you need a jab to beat Mayweather and Ortiz doesn't have much of a jab. That's true, but he does have the stamina, youthfulness, strength, size, determination, and power working for him.

Look, I'm not saying Ortiz wins. I think if this fight can potentially tell anything it will be that Floyd's durability is extremely overrated. Ortiz can maybe shake up Floyd if he punches in bunches and lands and then maybe if he can hurt him he can stop him. Mayweather is obviously the favorite. Is he justifiably a 7 to 1 favorite? I don't know, that seems a bit much to me. I think Ortiz is going to be the livest threat that Floyd has faced since Oscar De La Hoya. The reason I don't say Hatton is because Ortiz is much bigger, stronger, and a harder puncher. To put it in perspective, Pac was a 7 to 1 favorite against Clottey. He also is a 8 or 9 to 1 favorite against Marquez. Maybe some would think Marquez has a better chance because of styles and history but I don't believe so. Betting on both the underdogs in the Pac and Floyd fights may not be too crazy.

Has Ortiz attitude and refreshing mindset on 24-7 influenced me? Possibly, but I still think Ortiz's merit is still being undermined because he's a WW now. He's not a drained JR WW. He's not seemingly the same guy that quit against Maidana. He's a young energetic and strong fighter. He's going to be challenged more than most will expect. I think.

 

I never thought Mosley had much of a chance. I thought Floyd would control Hatton. I could put money on Ortiz just because I think the odds are a little inflated towards Floyd (I mainly try betting winners, but sometimes I'll bet because of the odds). Floyd's a comfortable favorite. Whether it should be 7 to 1 or 4 to 1 everyone knows and thinks he is the favorite. However, just looking at Ortiz on paper he seems more of threat than Mosley, Hatton, Marquez. Do you MW think any recent opponent is more of a threat than Ortiz (Stopping at Oscar in 2007)?

What I'm saying is I think Mayweather should get more credit. I'm basically also trying to evoke conversation here. I don't think this fight is a foregone conclusion. It's not like the Marquez-Floyd fight, nor is it like Pac fighting Margo or Clottey. Just my take, Ortiz is benig overlooked.

I remember that fight. Ortiz looked flat. He looked the same against Diaz. I suspect he was drained at JRW.

This is the reality that my brain tells me. My heart says he's a young hungry lion that's determined and willing to walk through the fire in order to get at Floyd in some way, shape, or form. His jab is basically his biggest issue against Floyd. Will almost render whatever southpaw advantage null and void. Hopefully we get an exciting fight. If Victor is willing to bring it and find a way to hit Floyd it could be interesting. I think Floyd's durability is rather overrated.

 

I'm not sure Mosley really had composure. Almost went into the ring believing Floyd was unbeatable. Floyd Sr described it perfectly. Mosley would be "jittery" like he was nervous. That's what helped zap some of his stamina. I didn't think Mosley had the workrate or the ability to push aggressively to beat Floyd. Like you said, Ortiz might go down swinging. I knew Mosley wouldn't.

Let's just hope it's a good fight I guess.
