Ortiz is miles above Madaina in terms of skill and potential. He fought a bad fight. Cotto almost lost to Torres a few years back, the difference is that Madaina's chin and will are better than Torres'. Madaina may have 'ruined' or 'exposed' Cotto the same way had they fought. If Ortiz fights patiently and follows basic boxing strategy to avoid wild right hand haymakers, he dominates the rematch. He's 22, and last night it showed. I think the post-fight interview showed how he's unaware of the boxing fanbase, how this all came too fast, and how much pressure he would have to face. He's too honest for his own good, probably not realizing how fickle boxing fans can be, and how his reputation may never recover. He saw Kellerman as his buddy, and didn't consider the professional repercussions of his candidness. He didn't take a brutal, career-ending beating the way Reid or Vargas did. His chin and confidence can come back, he just needs more discipline, focus, and for now, less willful and powerful opposition. This same thing probably would have happened to Angulo if he fought Mayorga, and what would have happened to Cotto if he fought Margo too early.
I think the rematch would have a different outcome. His trainer, ODLH and maybe SSM will make sure he learns from his mistakes. Maidana needs to improve his defense. One thing for sure, if Ortiz doesn't learn anything from what happened last night, then he can kiss his bright future good bye.
I didn't think Ortiz was getting murdered in there. He just lost heart. That fight was there for the taking for him but he just didn't have the stomach for it (against a less skilled guy whom he had already decked 3 times!)
If I was Maidana I would only fight him if they cant find a more top notch opp....at the end of the day Ortiz quit and doesnt deserve a rematch
Ortiz got cought in the emotion of the crowd. I think this is the best move for him since it was a close fight. He needs to show heart! Thats what makes a champion.
Let's not forget to state the obvious: Madaina will probably get more television exposure and money in a rematch against Ortiz on HBO than a fight with Kotelnik in Europe, or whatever.
He could be obligated from the way Ortiz said my rematch. It could be in there original contract for the fight
Yeah well said, and to be honest I see his interview and the subsequent hating goin on as good fuel to prove the doubters wrong. I hope he prevails,,not least because regarless of what he said post fight interview,,he does come across as a humble decent guy
We'll soon see how all that time in Germany has effected Madaina. He may stay there and make 20 defences against bums now...
He quit, The ref asked him if he wanted to continue, Ortiz shook his head No, from there called the Dr in to save face, and thats what happend the GBP fighter was saved by the ref to make him look or make it look like the Dr stopped the fight, the truth is Ortiz didnt want to continue watch the fight again. He doesnt have the heart listen to the interview after the fight he already talking about hanging them up, not a good sign for GBP
I dont know what match you guys were watching but i thought maidnana was better in every category over ortiz except for power...... maidana would knock out the victor "no heart" ortiz...in a re-match
