Honestly, I was rooting for Ortiz to win prior to the fight. But he lost my respect when he played dirty. No reason for me to defend the a$$h@le.

The punch was legal but still cheap to me. I still would have preferred to see the true champion in Mayweather by taking the high road.

 

Yeah, I'm not sure a menacing look qualifies as a "warning" boxing.

I suppose if Floyd really wanted to take the high road, he could have touched gloves, it seems to be the normal way 2 fighters sort of agree to start fighting. It's not required, sure, but it would have been the "honorable" thing to do.

 

Everyone calling the punches cheap is just sour grapes. This is all the fault of Ortiz for being a clown in the ring. I'm sorry but if someone punches me, the first thing I am doing is putting my hands up to defend myself, not look at some bystander with surprise.

I'm not a Mayweather fan but I've changed my initial opinion on this. I think Mayweather just wanted to continue on with the fight and didn't want to be held up by touching and hugging.

I can see why Ortiz would want to apologise having disgraced himself but if you look at Mayweather's body language - he acknowledges the apology and he takes up the offer to touch gloves. As far as Mayweather is concerned, the issue has been addressed, they've dealt with it and a point has been deducted and the fight is back on.

Ortiz, however feels the need to compound his regret and hug Mayweather. I don't think Mayweather meant any malice here, he just raises his gloves slightly to protect himself and tucks his chin in as any fighter would do with an approaching opponent. When he sees his opportunity he takes it. I'd imagine Mayweather reckons that Ortiz could be about to do something dirty as he steps in and Mayweather probably reckons that Ortiz would have done the same thing if he had of been in his place.

As Ricky Hatton said "it's not a tickling contest", it's disappointing but you can't really complain when you don't protect yourself and look away.

I don't think anyone is saying that a) the fight hadn't restarted so the KO wasn't legit (its plain to see that in both this was the case).
b) Mayweather wasn't ready to fight on as he clearly was and did so.

I think most people who have problems with it is that Ortiz was clearly unaware what was happening because Cortez was fannying about and not watching the boxers and the Mayweather knew Ortiz wasn't prepared and sucker punched him anyway.

Legally everything is fine - there is no argument to be made about that.

On a moral scale some people don't like it as it goes against the whole gentleman's conduct and respect your opponent fads that boxing pretends it has.

Ortiz didn't respect his opponent or wasn't a gentleman, that's undeniable and isn't much of an issue because its so clear. He should have been disqualified on the spot imo and maybes have some of his purse cut or take a year ban (to put others of trying the same, that **** can have fatal consequences).

And how do we know Mayweather intended to sucker punch Ortiz, because he came forward and let Ortiz embrace him (again) when he could have told him to get ****ed and not let him walk over with his head in the clouds and after the first punch he takes a quick look at Cortez to see if he has anything to say before throwing the straight right. If he had no qualms about what he was doing he wouldn't have looked at Cortez.

There was NO schooling going on.
Two..... don't know why the HBs were happening because he was being very effective in the 4th.
Ortiz was rocking May with every power shot he landed, and in the moments leading up to the butt, he had May damn near ready to go.

Everything looked almost scripted, and I think CableAddict has made the best thread irt this fight. Floyd was playing the villain while Ortiz was playing the young ill fated hero, beaten by the evil Floyd only to avenge his defeat in Floyds fianl fight in about 3 yrs.
