He had a solid chin in his prime. His legs are gone now. Povetkin is another good example. He lost all punch resistance as he aged.
Deontay Wilder, Felix Savon, Andy Ruiz, Odlanier Solis, Mike Perez, Bert Cooper, Bryant Jennings ... even Tony Thompson, Monte Barrett, Charles Martin, Christian Hammer ... people seem to know they can punch a little. He got old. Everyone gets old. Everyone still isn't getting punched in the head at 43 after close to 400 amateur and pro fights. Nobody brings up the guy's chin until he's 43 years old. Then it's, "Hey, he seems to be going down a lot?"
Ruiz hit them both pretty flush and he scrambled AJ for the rest of the fight. Terrible recovery. AJ clearly has the worse chin.
His chin is made of alchemy dust. If Andy had KO power Oldtiz wouldnt have made it 12 rounds. That much we do know.
Two different occasions. Ortiz turned the chance to fight Whyte whilst with Matchroom. Second time I think it was WBC offered an eliminator for the to fight. Whyte opted to fight one of Chisora or Parker at the time (can't remeber against who, but against the better boxer for much more money). AJ - Ortiz publically stated he would step in as Millers replacement. MRcalled his bluff and they turned it down. The Kownacki turned it down. Then Ruiz stepped up.
He seems to have a major weakness to clubbing shots to the side or top of his head. Which is weird because with his tree trunk neck and traps he looks like he could take a baseball bat to that region and shrug it off. It might be that once upon a time he could genuinely take a hard shot, but the trouble is he never fought anyone worth a damn in his prime so we have no basis for comparison. He seems to get up more often than not, so his recovery abilities aren't terrible, but when you're getting dropped by jabs and cuffing shots you don't have a great chin.
I don't remember Joshua ever getting dropped by a jab, or Ortiz ever getting up from a straight right from Wlad to win the fight. AJ's chin is fine.
Who did Ortiz ever fight in his prime that could seriously test it though? Jennings was an average puncher, as was Thompson. Scott was a featherfist. Who else did he fight?
Like for like, Ruiz scrambled and stopped Joshua. Ortiz didn't fight an old Wlad to know how he'd fair.
