he quit just like the owner of GBP.

He's only being honest with himself. Its not that he's quitting. He's realizing that getting hit is not the best way to make a living. If he keeps getting hit, there's nothing wrong with walking away from the sport. It was GBP who hyped him and you guys bought it hook line and sinker.

Kellerman's eyes poped out more than they already are, after hearing that.

I think there's some over analyzing going on here. The kid just faced his first UNDISPUTED professional loss. Sure he quit. Many great fighters have quit, Pep, De la Hoya, Chavez. Ortiz will need time to decide if he's made out for the fight game or not, but it wouldn't be humanly possible not to have thoughts of hanging them up for good after being hyped up like that. At least he had balls enough to take complete blame for the loss, a lesser man would have blamed many things but he came right out and said his corner did a great job and that it was solely Victor's fault that he lost. Unlike some other fighters :deal(Oscar)

I like Ortiz a lot as a person. Thing is, being a good person does not mean you have the disposition to be a fighter.

If his heart isn't into it, I hope he retires and embarks on a career in the real world. Best to him either way.

Yes, it completely threw me. I've seen a lot of fighters quit and even come back better than before, but I've never seen a young fighter basically quit on boxing altogether after a loss like that. That caught me off guard. Not something you expect to hear from a rising star like Ortiz was.

It certainly was very strange. I think this was part of the reason that he struck many as so charismatic before. He doesn't give the normal, dull responses to interviewers' questions. He was probably too candid for his own good tonight.

if he'd have gone out like a vargas - hang tough, get pummeled - he might have really become an attraction. i think HBO and GBP already decided that ortiz is a star, that all he had to do was show up and beat the more primitive maidana.

maidana came out, smashed, hopefully will be ready to win the world title and become an exciting attraction.
