The idea that GGG slipped that much from Wade to Brook is nonsense. The skill level between Wade and Brook/Jacobs/Canelo is immense. GGG was slightly exposed vs Willie Monroe I was at the fight and genuinely felt concern when Monroe was teeing off on GGGs head in the 4th round with combos. Canelo wasted everyone's time when he fought Chavez Jr but he made himself a bunch of money in a easy fight.
to this day I still feel dirty about buying that fight. Hope Chavez jr loses all his money for phoning in that performance.
You are completely right, Oscar is no worse than Arum or Haymon and he's actually better than Michel (!). It's just that some of us were hopeful that he was going to be a different and better type of promoter. Especially after all the good things he said he'd try to do. Arum and Haymon have been around for ages, we know what to expect.
You make fair points but I thing the “last 4 or 5 years” remark is something of an artificial line of demarcation. Here’s the thing, some of us, not you, but other posters are conflating Oscar the man with Oscar the promoter- maybe that’s not fair but I think the two aren’t separate. So here are my grievances with Oscar (not that he cares): 1) Oscar said he would be different than King of Arum, but one of his first orders of business was to try to poach Manny Pacquiao with a duffel bag of cash. The same thing that Don King did with Hasim Rahman. This began the Cold War with Arum and iirc Oscar lost the legal battle. 2) Purchasing Ring magazine. Fans, other promoters and writes squealed but fair play to Oscar for scooping the other guys. I don’t blame him at all for buying the magazine but he immediately fired the whole staff and moved the location from philly to LA. It came across as ruthless and cutthroat. On top of that, it was editor Nigel Collins who had reinstituted the Ring belt and was trying to bring the tarnished history of the Ring back to a respectable place amongst fans. 3) Richard Schaefer- he allowed some Swiss banker to become the face of GBP and we became inundated with this guy who had no boxing background. This would bite Oscar in the ass in the future. 4) Fishnets- you can try to be as liberal as you want but that was a real bizarre f...ing turn off for many boxing fans. And not that there was any good way of handling it, but he did about as bad a job of handling it as possible. 5) Coke and DUIs- not cool, man 6) Millie and his son with her- 4-6 all dovetail together. He tried to portray the family man but obviously he’s not. In a big way. Hypocrisy is never ever attractive in anybody, whether it be in politicians, law enforcement, clergy, Hollywood or boxing. 7) Richard Schaefer fleeced Oscar and was key in building up al haymon, which hasn’t helped boxing one bit. Presumably due to his substance abuse issues and “alternative lifestyle” he allowed his company to damn near get destroyed and allowed a rival to gain a foothold in which only fans get screwed. 8) Canelo was a manufactured champ (he’s grown into a borderline legit champ, but not based on ring dominance). For a guy who was going to save boxing and do things different, he has absolutely manipulated the alphabet devils to Canelo ‘s and his advantage. PPV fights for bogus belts etc. 9) The hypocrisy of whining against Floyd and Mcgregor and then talking about doing it himself. This knucklehead has been outsmarted by Floyd every step of the way ever since they fought. It’s not as if Oscar really tried for years to drain boxings swamp but finally succumbed to it, it seemed as if he was built for the swamp from the beginning. I can go on but will stop here. While it might seem unnecessarily harsh on Oscar, and I’m not saying he’s worse than the others -only comparable, it’s all of the above reasons that he’s perceived by many to be worse. For a man who said he would be better, he failed.
I don’t get all the bitching that goes on with boxing fans. We’ve gotten some great fights in pretty every division.
Oscar is trying to destroy Golovkin's career by keeping him inactive, Oscar will wear his fishnets while buying the judges, referee, boxing commission, etc., like he did before.............
Yes, I agree, when Oscar decided to become a promoter, I had hope.................but he turned into a cheat, who stacks the deck against his fighter's opponents, esp. Golovkin Vs. El Pollo! I want to see neutral judges, referee and boxing commission! Don't want to see Bob Bennett cheer leading for Oscar's El Pollo or any of his fighters...........Oscar will not allow Linares to fight Lomachenko, he knows Linares would lose............let's see more WBSS tournaments, but they were boycotted by USTV, so I guess the promoters, powers that be in boxing, did not want us to see good fights. USYK/Gassiev will also be boycotted and EVERYONE WANTS TO SEE THAT FIGHT!
I completely agree but he doesn't have many big names, so his bad judgement doesn't impact the game apart from Linares/Lomachenko fight. If Canelo seriously injures himself or he loses to someone like Charlo or Devryachenko when he moves up than GB will suffer loses. Oscar has only one big star name in Canelo Alvarez. Oscar has people who do everything for him, he himself is bad businessman.
