What rules would exist here? The rules that allowed Dempsey to hover over an opponent like a shark and pummel him as he was trying to get up ala Willard?

If that's the case, maybe Dempsey could stop Oscar. If fought under modern rules, I give Oscar a pretty fair chance. He could punch pretty good himself, was strong as hell, durable and could surprise you with some clever ring generalship.

Could Dempsey take Oscar's clubbing punches, which packed some power? What big punchers did Dempsey ever face?

I don't think it would be as brutally lopsided as most of you guys think. Bonavena was a tough customer and gave Ali, Frazier, Chuvalo and many others a hard time. He's got an underrated "clever" side to him...as well as being strong and durable as hell. I think Dempsey would win, but more likely, by a decision...with the possibility of Bonavena scoring a knockdown along the way...hell, if Firpo could do it, then the tougher Ringo probably was capable of it as well. Oscar had the smarts to survive when he had to.

 

In a nutshell right here...Ringo is being dismissed here. Would definitely pick Dempsey...but late stop or decision...not a blow out. It would be a war...but Dempsey is the more talented, faster, and more powerful fighter.

 

I highly doubt Bonavena was stronger than Firpo - that's all Firpo relied on literally all he relied on!?. All he had was his pure brute strength and power which is the only thing that got him as far as he got - he was always so much the stronger and more powerful guy in there in all his fights that he kinda got away with having no rudimentary skills to speak of - and put Firpo in the ring with Bonavena and Firpo would again only have his advantage in the strength to rely on.

Frazier was not better than Dempsey. He just wasn't. An the notion that if Frazier couldn't stop someone then Dempsey couldn't is laughable - could you see Joe Frazier causing the kinda damage to Willard that Dempsey did?? I don't think so.

Bonavena was a rugged tryer but he at his core he wasn't above the contender level in reality and lost to all the top level operators of his day - feather fisted Jimmy Ellis put him down twice - and Bonavena would be tasting punches harder and more vicious than anyone else he faced in his career - over half of his 44 knockout wins came inside the first round - and a further 13 of them came inside 3 rounds - Bonavena would be the 14th

 

Why do people make so much of the Firpo fight?

Yes he nearly scored the upset by luck or judgment, but he was getting dominated badly, and the fight would have been stopped in the first round today.

If they had fought 20 times, that is probably the best that Firpo could have done.

 

And it looked more of a shove that put Dempsey out of the ring(although Firpo had shaken him earlier).

 

Dempsey basically went for the kill, and gambled that his head movement would protect him.

The only thing Firpo achieved, was being the man who was present, when the law of averages finally went against Dempsey!
