I looove Oscar Bonavena...I saw this one live on tv..I was addicted to that heavyweight tournament....Oscar takes on Karl Mildenberger. This content is protected
He was courageous and "southpaw awkward", somewhat awkwardly clever...sorta...He gave Ali fits in 1966, and was favored, I believe, to beat this wild, "clumsy oaf" from Argentina. What I get a kick out of is how "cheeky" Oscar is in his interview with Cosell...who obviously knew that he had an unpredictable mad man to interview.
Would you put him on a historical list of perhaps the top ten best ever European heavies? I know his record looks quite flattering in terms of numbers but I'm not exactly sure where you would rank how the level of competition he was routinely fighting.
Not sure of where he belongs exactly, but I don't think he would crack the top 10,...but I must admit I haven't dwelt on Euro heavies that much...I think I'll give that subject a go.
