People love Oscar and I'm guessing many will pick him. I'm picking Dokes. Michael was bigger, faster, more skillful. He'd have a tough night, but I think he'd outbox Bonavena.
I think Dokes' fast hands and boxing ability would bring an element to the table that may decide the outcome of a close decision.
Dokes would win by a close decision. Oscar was stronger, very awkward type, but Dokes was about just as tough, of course faster, and better boxing ability as mentioned before. I think some of the stamina issues Dokes had comes into play, but he would have enough to hold off Oscar for that majority decision win.
I don't think that highly of Dokes, but he would probably edged Oscar who would have found a way to lose. I'd be hollering for Ringo all the way though.
This would be like the Weaver rematch fight for Dokes. He'd have to dig real real deep against this guy. The problem with the heavies digging that deep is their form the next fight. But Dokes is not losing a decision against this guy in a DKP fight.
Yep.. And I've never been sure that the C00ney who fought Holmes was even the best version. He entered that fight after only seeing 54 seconds of ring action in nearly two years and going up against an opponent that he wasn't totally confident he could best.. The active fighting contender in Gerry C00ney from 1979 to 1981 was a different man and against a dokes or bonavena his mentality would likely be different.
Slight possibility, but if Gerry caught Oscar, when the smoke clears, Oscar is going to be standing there, and Gerry won't know how to deal with it. Could see Oscar outmuscling Gerry, winning late on stoppage, or wide decision. As tough as Michael was, Gerry would find himself in situations he wouldn't want to be in, losing by late round tko.
The thing about Michael Dokes that always bothered me was that his defense was his chin. He never got out of the way of anything. My God even Tex Cobb had no problem connecting repeatedly. He was just always there to be hit. He definitely had faster hands and a sharper clip than Bonavena, but those wild clubbing punches would always find their mark on the Dokes chin. I wouldn't be betting anything of importance on this fight because anything could happen.
At 5'10", 200 lbs its doubtful that Oscar is "out muscling" the 6'7", 225 lbs C00ney. I can see a possible scenario where he outlasts him over many rounds, but he'd have to take a helacious beating along the way to do it, and I don't think Bonavena has ever taken that kind of punishment from someone who's that big and hits that hard. The Dokes of the early 80's blew hot and cold.. He struggled life and death against Cobb and Ocasio in fights that some felt he lost. He benefited from controversial outcomes in both Weaver fights and was KO'd by Coetzee who's own career was on shaky legs by that point. A prime Holmes who was a far better boxer and far more durable than Dokes had to bring is "A" game to beat Gerry and even then he had a struggle.. Also mind you this was a relatively Idol C00ney who had seen only 54 seconds of actual ring action in nearly two years and not the active fighting destroyer of 1979-1981.
