First legitimate welterweight? What about Pernell, Carr, Quartey?
By the way, Hoya beat Trinidad.

roy jones wernt that impressive in his first five years. it took him 4 years to get a title shot. this was not due to a lack of ability but due to the fact that jones wouldnt go with one of the big promotors

Pernell was a lightweight, who moved up. By the way, the same case could be made for Pernell & Quartey against De La Hoya.

Otherwise normal males like this Bozo would knock over three naked Hooter's Girls to get to de la Hoya and try to rip his shirt off.

We can also credit him for exposing DLH as a scaredy cat.

All magnificent first 5's, but when u read that long list on De La Hoya, I genuinely think his was superior. He was the only one to end his 1st 5 years as pound-for-pound number 1, only one to win 5 world titles, only one to do so at more than 1 weight division (3 actually).

The only real alternative anyone has suggested IMO is Sugar Ray Leonard, and although he didn't achieve as much, he definitely has a strong case due to the names on the record. Duran, Hearns and Benitez clearly beat the 3 best on De La Hoya's (Hernandez, and not-shot but past-prime Chavez and Whitaker)

I still vote De La Hoya on this.

Disagreed. Oscar may have won 5 belts, but he never won a WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP (Till he fought Vargas) and never truly Unified, and was NEVER an Undisputed WORLD CHAMPION. He won many titles, many belts, but had no longevity with any of them.

He got a gift in the Pea fight. He was dropped, clowned and outlanded in that fight. A faded Pea will forever own Oscar between the ropes.:deal

For a guy currently campainging at Jr. Middleweight. I hardly think him beating Jr. Lightweights & Lightweights is that all awe inspiring. If Roy Jones started out at Jr. Welter. Wouldn't his resume be just as impressive if not more?
