He was the #1 P4P fighter in the world after he beat Whitaker, and was top 5 at the time he faced him. Anyone who's seen him at the lighter weights knows that's when he was at his most effective. In the following years he would start to develop stamina problems late in fights. So yeah, he was definitely at his very best in the first Whitaker fight. The fact that he was coming up in weight means jack ****, as he was CLEARLY the bigger man and fit the weight perfectly.

Yes, world titles. The major ones on offer. The only ones on offer. The same ones that all your favourite fighters from the 1970s onwards have fought for.

The WBA of 2008 is a far cry from the ones that Ali and Holmes wore. Organizational only, until all three are unified.

Floyd Mayweather has NEVER been a legitimate world champion then. Neither has Thomas Hearns. But Jermain Taylor has. Great logic.

A unified one, anyway, and I do believe that Floyd won an IBF somewhere along the line.

I thought you had to win all three though?

In this murky world of self-interest, politics and shirkers, it just isn't fair to say anyone who doesn't have the years and the money to wait to unify all three isn't a true/legitimate champion. That's why The Ring belts were invented. Right now none of Calzaghe, Pavlik, Vasquez, Mijares and Calderon hold all 3 titles, but everyone knows they are the true world champion of their weight class. And IMO, winning 5 world titles at 3 weights (as DLH did) is a better achievement than winning 3 world titles at 1 weight (as Tyson did). That's very simple mathematics. Unifying in the same weight division is not automatically a superb achievement, as some can come across it quite easily (Jermain Taylor), some can be refused unification fights for years, and some guys who win organizational titles for short periods are not very good at all. A great WBC champion like Mayweather or Hearns beats a unified champion like Taylor, so the old unification argument doesn't hold up at all IMO.

I'd have to say Leonard had the best first 5 years, 3 of the greatest fighters of all-time, plus wins over Kalule and Ranzanny, two-division champ.

    But Ali deserves mention:

Undisputed heavyweight champion of the World, 22-0 (18) two stoppage wins over Sonny Liston, Knocked out Floyd Patterson, wins over Henry Cooper, Doug Jones, and Archie Moore (who was actually ancient by the time).

According to your warped theories, Vinny Paz and Hector Camacho have between them 19 world titles.

Tyson was a heavyweight though, if he had divisions above him he very likely would have won in multiple weight classes, but there's nothing above heavy. Even so, who they beat is the biggest factor when taking in what they achieved. DLH's first 5 years and Tyson's first 5 years are close, probably give it to Tyson though.

If you dont count the WBOgus, OScar only has about 5 title victories. A WBC jr ww, ww (2x), jr. middleweight (IBF), and then jr, middle against Mayorga. Johnny Tapia has won WBO gold on 2 different occasions, and a WBA crown, and 2 IBF crowns. Vinny Paz has won the WBA, WBU and IBC belts. Hector Camacho has captured WBC titles, and a WBO (Haugen?) and an IBC and the NBA!!!

While big names, the wins against Paez and Hernandez you need to take with a grain of salt because both were coming up in weight, especially Genaro. Also keep in mind that the WBO was nowhere near where it is today. The WBO was on par with what the IBO is today, a fringe world belt.

However, you can argue the other way and talk about DLH's relative youth and inexperience being overcome as he won all these fights. Even knocking out classy vets like Jeff Mayweather speaks volumes about the skill level he had early on.

Love him or hate him, undoubtedly an impressive 5 year stretch for someone BEGINNING their career.
