    Great post. Many people dont realize how good a young oscar de la hoya was. One of the best technical boxers of the 1990s. He was virtually unstoppable as a lightweight destroying the top contenders at 135. Against chavez, he ripped apart chavez and dominated him like no one had ever done before. Chavez record going into the fight was 96-1

    His victory over a roided Vargas was a big accomplishment.. he deserves alot of credit for pulling that one out.

    I agree, Oscar had the wrong gameplan for his first fight with mosley, he chose to stand and trade with Mosley when he could have easily used a more useful method. The second fight with Shane Mosley was different under his trainer Floyd snr, De La Hoya had a proper set plan for his remtach, he used the jab to good affect and in the mid-later rounds of the fight switched his focus to the body which worked as a very useful tactic in his favour.

    One thing I admire about Oscar De La Hoya is that his mental preperation before a fight is very strong, he becomes very focused, I know in some of his big outing he has loss due to tireing in the later stages of a fight, but Oscar has always prepared well for opponents and studied them well and set plans and put together tactics and gameplansfor opponents such as the Trinidad fight, Chavez fight, Mosley fight, Hopkins fight, Vargas, Mayorga etc.

    Absolutely, but he SHOULD HAVE gotten the credit for also beating the roided up version of Mosley in their 2nd fight. Very few robberies eat at me for years afterward... this is one of them.

    The best that I ever saw Oscar fight was in the first 8 rounds against Trinidad.

    But, for the best complete performance, it has to be Vargas. Oscar used pure boxing skill and ability to beat the bigger and stronger man. A beautiful performance.

    As for excitment i think vargas was his most exciting. The gatti fight made him look like great as well.

    They weren't though. And it wasn't 4 rounds he ran for. It was at most 10-12th rounds. It was really in round 11 when he got on his bike and stopped sticking entirely. But EVEN in one of those rounds he still outlanded Tito!

    Man it's really tough to say. Quartey fight was great but oscar's performance wasn't great until that 12th round. But the drama that fight produced was incredible. Oscar was winning up till they traded knockdowns and he kinda shut down offensively for 2-3 rounds, but started opening up again in the last 3-4 rounds and did do enough to earn the victory. But best performance? a 12th round best, ya.

    I loved the Ruelas fight. That was the quickest, most vicious left hook I saw Oscar ever throw. Incredible while that fight lasted.

    Chavez was a great performance, ya. Vargas, pretty good, but that was a slightly slower version of Oscar at that weight.

    Oscar probably peaked in the mosley 1 fight. Unfortunately he threw out his gameplan or never even had one, as he thought he would walk through Mosley and didn't respect Mosleys speed or power. But that Oscar was amazing, and only lost due to gassing just a bit whereas mosley didn't gas. But that performance considering the speed, amazing combinations, and power, that was peak oscar I think. Unfortunately he had the wrong gameplan that night.

    Mayorga was a great performance also all things considered. Nobody thought Oscar was gonna KO Mayorga or atleast sit him down so quickly and easily. It even took tito 6--7 rounds to put him down if I remember right. OScar comes out and blitzes him in 90 seconds.
