Oscar De La Hoya: Boxing Fans, Don't Support IVayweather-MacGregor

Oscar is a hater but it doesn't devalue the truth of his point. This fight is an absolute farce and really shouldn't be happening.

 

You guys can think I'm crazy if you want. Connor is going to give Money trouble in the early rounds. Connor should get stopped around the 7th or 8th unless he catches Floyd with a left hand. Then it'll go 9 rounds before Connor gets finished...

 

It is a real fight. Personally I'd rather Floyd take someone like an Amir Khan, a Canelo, a Triple G, a Keith Thurman or somebody like that for his 50th Fight.

But I'm still OK with him fighting Conor because as an MMA fighter he's shown he has good punching power and commitment on his punches. I think Conor is adjusting well to boxing, if you watch his boxing lesson videos he's dropped, he seems to have a lot of the psychology down and shows that he has a lot of hand speed and possibly power. So I don't subscribe to the idea that this isn't a real fight or it's not a real boxing match. It is a real boxing match and given Floyd's age it could be very entertaining. This is one guy that may just have Floyd's number, he's probably going to spend every second of the fight chasing Floyd down and trying to corner him. And I can see after the fight fans being amazed at how competitive it was.

A lot of you who are hating on this fight during fight week will be glued to the TV waiting for Conor and Floyd to get it on. Oscar wants Floyd to rematch a boxer, namely Canelo, I will want to support Floyd vs Conor just to see what happens. Has Floyd lost a step? How big of a danger is Conor for Floyd. Just because Conor will be making his pro boxing debut he still has a ton of MMA kickboxing experience.

It’s much harder for a boxer to compete in MMA than it is for an MMA fighter to compete in boxing. Boxing is simply one of the many facets of MMA. When James Toney fought Randy Couture in a UFC cage, that was a joke. Toney had no chance, it was pointless.

However, that can’t be said the other way around because UFC fighters just have to adjust their kickboxing style to not having to worry about takedowns and defending them. There also haven’t been too many major Boxer vs MMA fighter fights in boxing, so this will be big because you have the former/recent P4P boxing champ vs one of the best fighters in MMA fighting under boxing rules.

So this is like a dream scenario for fans of both sports, a scenario that we really haven’t seen before. Boxing is the ultimate proving ground for MMA fighters, if an MMA fighter can beat a world class boxer in boxing, that’s something significant that would be unprecedented. As a boxing fan first and foremost I know if Conor wins MMA fans will have bragging rights, and many boxing fans feel that Floyd needs to win for boxing’s sake. But once again these emotions are due to the boxing vs MMA fanbase coming together for a rare event where an MMA fighter has a chance to beat a major boxer in his own sport. It’s going to capture the interest of the world.

While I agree the Mayweather/McGregor fight is a farce, and will do nothing but hurt the sport after we watch Mayweather decision an amateur for 12 boring rounds, I don't want to hear it from Oscar.

He's just as bad. The Chavez fight? Ducking Golovkin? Promoting Canelo's constant weight bullying? The unusual decisions that always favor Canelo?

It's hypocrisy.

Mcgregor doesn't even have a style that would force an old Floyd to extend himself and take advantage of his youth. He's a low workrate counter puncher who finds openings vs guys who don't know how to box. Jr will slap his face off while have conversations with people in the audience at the same time.
