...plus Whitaker was well prepared, rose to the occasion, and fought the best fight he possibly could have. De La Hoya was still improving and gave the older fighter way too much respect. Oscar could have won this fight convincingly but did not fight a smart fight.

Agreed I also didn't think Whitiker did enough to win ..Way to much defense not enough offense .Funny but had that fight taken place today who do you think gets awarded the decision sicne defense is more favorable these days?

Oscar could have imposed his will more he was defiantly the fresher man with youth and speed ..But like you said he gave Whitiker too much respect .

About the Oscar and Pernell fight it was a clear Oscar win.

It comes down to this. Oscar was banging Pernell in the head way harder than Pernell could hit back.

    Solid win for DLH.

If you feel oscar de la hoya is overrated you obviously dont know boxing. When mentioned, its said he lost big name fights but he was always a tough opponent. That and he should of had a win over tito and mosley (a roided mosley).

First off, Oscar BEAT Quartey in an amazing and close fight that Oscar EARNED and deserved. He put Quartey down more and landed more power punches. People just weren't used to seeing Oscar face that kind of adversity at the time and were shocked when he was put down with a flash KD. But up until then, he was winning the fight, got tentative for a few rounds losing them, but then came back to life in the last 3 rounds and getting the only 10-8 round of the fight in the 12th round.
If you want to talk about any fights being robberies when it comes to Oscar, you have to talk about trinidad, Mosley 2 and Sturm, but the Sturm fight was irrelevant as was the hopkins fight. Oscar was horrible at that weight, he looked like he didn't even train his body was so soft and this was at the tail end of his career, past his prime.

When looking at Oscar's career, there's only ONE guy that beat Oscar during his prime, Shane Mosley in and epic war that went back and fourth and shane pulled it out the last 2 rounds to edge a 115-113 decision. If you look at how oscar fought and know anything about him, he fought a re****ed fight, but that was because of all the criticism he faced from the Tito fight, and thought he had to go toe to toe with a faster guy with an equally impressive chin. He could have at any point reverted back to his boxing skills and cruised to a comfortable win over shane, like he did in the second fight but he wanted to vindicate himself to the fans and lost because of that. Regardless though, the man fought almost everyone, wasn't scared to take fights where he wasn't the favorite and beat a plethora of elite and prime fighters and a handful of ATGs in there! Oscar was ranked P4P #1 in the world (97 and 98) during a time where you had Prime Roy Jones, Hopkins, Toney, holyfield, Lewis, Barrera, Morales, Whitaker, Tapia, Mayweather, Norris, trinidad, Mosley etc. Right there tells you everything you need to know about Oscar. Ranked #1 ahead of all those amazing elite fighters is something very special.

exactly, pernell outlanded oscar overall but mostly just with his jab, but oscar landed more power shots and lander the harder shots and did damage to pernell. Close but clear win.

exactly, what people don't remember or just weren't around then, that fight was billed "POUND for POUND". Pernell was still regarded as P4P #1 in the world. When oscar beat him, he was then Ranked #1 hence the fight's title.

Lets be honest DLH beat PRIME mosley twice, prime tito, prime quartey, prime vargas, faded sweetpea, old JCC - and was taking the fight to bernard (and winning) before the career middleweight KO'd the natural welterweight.

damn old, shot, 35yr old oscar was taking the fight to prime floyd before he faded down the stretch and lost a respectable 7-5 decision.

Prime Oscar (who fought tito, mosley) smokes prime mayweather and manny pacquiao ON THE SAME NIGHT.

    DLH was very underrated.

A quick reminder: DLH moves up to 140 and his first title fight is vs. JCC.
Moves up to Welter and his first title fight is vs Whitaker.
Moves up to 154 and his first couple of fights are vs Castillejo and Vargas.

DLH has FLoyd beat even in the cojones dept.

It's been said before but it bears repeating. DLH cruises through an undefeated record with FLoyd's resume and does it in a more spectacular manner.

You can tell a nut hugger from a boxing fan because nut huggers have to hate and discredit everyone else who isn't their favorite.

Face facts. Delahoya is a special boxer who won a national golden gloves title, an olympic gold medal and multiple world titles.

Recognizing Oscar's greatness in the sport doesn't take away from Floyd Mayweather or Manny Pacquiao.....they are special in their own right and can be mentioned AMONG the best who ever did it.

    totally agree
he was a 5 foot 11 inch super feather and lightweight beating up on midgets and past their prime former champions who had names still because of their long careers. Paez, Chavez, Dorsey, Molina (over 100 fights, coming off loss and draws) basically his fights/title at 130,135, 140 are forgettable..Darryl Tyson? Carl Griffeth?
Solid win over MA Gonzalez however
Chavez rematch had no business being at 147, most thought he lost to Quartey and Whitaker or at least a draw. lost to SSM, smoke and mirrors with a shinny name like arturo gatti who was no welterweight.
could have fought forrest at some point, fights guys like yory boy and javier castellio at the end when he was fighting 1 time a year.
so yeah, other than him fighting a nice names on his resume, they were either guys out of their division, old (or both) or he didnt win.
very good fighter, not the legend that HBO makes him out to be
