Oscar De La Hoya Is Overrated!

He beat plenty of other good guys:Vargas,Quartey,Camacho,etc.
And he beat Trinidad and Mosley the second time.

 

I too believe he is overrated. Not massively, but enough to warrant a debate

 

He held a lot of titles in different weight classes. He did beat a lot of top guys in most of those weight classes. I felt he beat Trinidad too. How could you call him overated. With exception to Hopkins and Pacman, in most of his losing efforts the fights were somewhat close.
Definitely not overated, definitely a hall of famer.
He accomplished a lot for basically being a one armed fighter. His left hand was the majority of his game.

 

chavez and whitaker were OLD when he beat them, so lets not play the OLD card on his losses to mayweather and pacman

Why the hell not? Isn't this something that we decry other greats for (Calzaghe, Jones, Floyd to some extent)? Granted, he could afford to take risks as even if he lost, he held his popularity, but he still didn't *have* to. But he did.

I don't think he's overrated among knowledgable fans. They know that in most of his biggest fights, he fell short. Hell, even casual fans can see the L column. Great fighter, but people know he's not the pinacle of his generation.

 

He is overrated in the same way Tyson is overrated.

Being a bit of a pop culture icon people will overblow the guys stature.

He is still a accomplished fighter.

 

i just hated the way HBO tried to portray him as some kind of sex symbol....when he would walk to the ring, they would pan the camera toward girls jumping up and down....and the way Jim Lampley was gay for him....

 

I hate this "he never beat anyone" ****. It's all anyone ever seems to say. DLH is far from the most over-rated boxer ever but I agree he is over-rated because he was so famous. He was very good but not as good as a lot of people make out.

 

I agree with the comparisons to Tyson. Both had great talent and both made big impacts in the sport. They help popularized the sport when Ali left. But they never beat the best in there respective era.

Oscar did not beat mosely. He is overated. hes good but not great, but boxing needed oscar so its ok

 

Whiatker questionable he was outlanded, dropped and clowned by a faded Pea.

Chavez had been in many wars and was shot IMO.

Vargas Good win but some will say Tito destroyed him and he was never the same again.

Quartey a close fight that could have gone either way. There should have been an immediate rematch.

Hopkins KTFO

Strum a fight which he clearly lost but was given the decision because of the mega-fight with Hopkins was coming up.

Mosley 2 close fight that I thought after re-watching a few days ago that Oscar probably pulled out.

Tito Outboxed Tito fro the first half of the fight but chose not to engage the rest of the fight and paid for it.

Pac looked horrible past his best at a weight he had no business at but still doesn't excuse the fact that he quit against a much smaller man.

PBF Decent account for himself but lost again to a smaller fighter moving up in weight to fight him.

 

Put it this way, in his prime he was never outclassed as much as Trininad was by Winky and Mosley was by Forrest. Say what you want Tito was clearly outboxed and Mosley was on roids and lost the second fight. He always kept fights close and competitive.

 

You don't know how to score a fight. Shane beat Oscar clearly in their first fight.:deal

 

But a clean Mosley beat DLH.
