"No opponent has been selected for the May fight, but names under discussion include three junior welterweights, all of whom would give up considerable size to De La Hoya in a bout that would likely take place at about 150 pounds: Steve Forbes, reigning titleholder Paulie Malignaggi and Dmitriy Salita." Source ESPN http://sports.espn.go.com/sports/boxing/news/story?id=3203793 So now he has to fight junior welterweights to get a tuneup "win" for Mayweather. At least Floyd was a welterweight when he fought him but now picking a 140 pounder?!?! This handpicking of opponents is getting rediculous.
These guys are good style matchups to prepare for Floyd. But, I would have preferred Zab Judah to be honest. Remember that Oscar de la Hoya has fought the best competition of all active fighters today. He doesn't duck a good challenge.
I really don't understand the objections. A tune up, by definition, is an easy fight that prepares the body for the real deal. It's not meant to be hard. It's a tune up.
but fighting someone 2 weight classes lower than him...thats is what annoys me..but thats just my opinion.
All opinions are welcome of course. But for me, Oscar taking on a guy who has not chance of beating him in front of a $20m dollar payday (not to mention a fight against the best on the planet) makes perfect sense. You don't see tune ups much these days, but I think his age and inactivity are reasons enough. Meanwhile, they're calling it what it is - presumably with his blessing - a tune up. What would be obscene would be if they were trying to sell it as a proper fight. Which they aren't. The reasons they've gone down a division is in order that they can still get a name, just one that can't win. That is cynical, I agree, but that's the business I suppose. I suppose you can say that because DeLa Hoya is a stinging puncher rather than a hard one, at least it's unlikely that someone will get hurt.
De La Hoya has fought many guys moving up in weight throughout his career and usually had a "tune-up" or "gimme" fight in between his big fights against tough opposition. This isn't anything new, except for the 2 divisions thing instead of 1.
True, but spinks is very quick, and moves a lot, wont stand and trade, and is closer to the weight than Malinaggi or Forbes or whoever else is being mentioned A bit more credible
Before all this talk about a rematch with Mayweather came up I truly thought that Oscar would fight either Zab Judah or Corey Spinks
