I guess swinging at the air counts as landed punches for Oscar. The crowd cheered as he missed. Didn't Oscar and all of his fans cry about punch stats with his loss to Tito and his 2nd loss to Mosley?

That Pound 4 pound ranking was almost a year after the fight (issue was in may of 98)

Jones was #1 for a real quick spell around Feb of 97 I believe, then Whitaker had that crazy KO stoppage over Hurtado and it elevated him to #1, Jones to #2 and Oscar to #3 when Oscar beat up 43-0 Gonzales.

Yes! Quartey was considered a top guy.

I guess this helps my argument that we are talking about a fight in 1997 being his best win when he fought in blockbuster PPV's for 11 more years.

    So far we have -

Whitaker decision in 1997, though argument he deserved the win

Quartey in 1999, from me and it's probably arguable if Ike was ever an A plus fighter, but to DLH's credit I thought Ike was a BEAST when DLH beat him.

No, I cried about those losses because I felt Oscar won the Trinidad fight based on winning rounds. The Mosley fight I was cool with, until it turned out he was roiding the whole time.

Cool, thanks for the lesson. That Hurtado fight looks crazy, I'm going to have to look it up. Based on everything you hear about Sweet Pea, a come from behind KO victory didn't seem likely to happen in his career.

    Thanks for the info.

Your telling me Tito, Mosley and even Vargas were not top fighters at that time? :blood

I was actually talking to Vince Phillips the other day at the wild card and he was saying how badly he wanted the Oscar fight and how he hated Ike for stopping him and taking the fight away from him

The only A level fighter Oscar missed was IMO Tszyu, but he got KTFO by Phillips at that point, then Phillips got KTFO by Ike, who Oscar beat.

Quartey we agree on. Vargas, as mentioned in another popular thread "Trinidad vs. Vargas" at the moment was probably "ruined" by Trinidad, though I still think Vargas was very good going into this fight, though he was roided out of his skull. And he didn't win the mosley fights, on paper, which is my argument in this thread, though don't discount your argument he deserved the win.

No problem man. The Ring Annual ratings are always a year behind just so you know, you can look the fight up on youtube. His fight with Rivera, Oscar and Hurtado just proves how great Whitaker is, one of my favourite fighters along with oscar.

Again, on paper, he didn't beat Tito or Mosley.

I consider it one of the stranger myths in boxing. A bit like how Chris John doesn't fight away from Indonesia, Mayweather ducked all the biggest challenges and Cuevas dominated the welterweight division for years. None of them make any sense to me.

I can cry all day about Oscar losing to Trinidad and him being robbed, but I'll always have the Sturm fight to shove my foot right back down my throat  :patsch

Ruined or not Vargas was STILL a TOP fighter at that time in the Boxing world.
