He controlled the fight. Completely frustrated him with the jab and defense. He outlanded and out threw Oscar, IIRC.
The only thing he controlled was his dance moves. Oscar outlanded him in powerpunches and actually landed more than just a jab. Oscar landed many combo's and actually forced the fight and was the aggressor. Oscar landed the more effective punches, just look at Oscar's face, completely unmarked. Pernell's face, his eye swollen shut. I wouldn't have argued a draw since nobody really WON the fight all things considered, but Pernell was the least deserving. He chose to dance more than fight.
Whitaker was throwing more punches and made Oscar miss...Where was Oscar landing combos? Whitaker's face was swelling for years. He was old. A guy's face doesn't determine who won the fight.
I remember this fight clearly. ODLH won this fight hands down. Pernell started to clown and run. ODLH was the aggressor and Pernell never wanted to engage.
It was a fight that could've gone either way. I have no argument with anyone giving it to either guy by a point or two depending on what you're looking for, Whitaker maybe should've got the benefit of the doubt seeing as he was champ, but they never really ganna give him a decision in a close fight against a rising cash-cow. There should have been a rematch by Bob wanted nothing to do with Sweet Pete again. It actually enhanced Pete's legacy for me. 33 year old crack head, who didn't look good in his previous few fights, out of his career best weight making a future HOF/ATG in his prime look so silly at times. Taking away his best punches (jab, the left hook) and giving a masterclass on ring generalship.
Oscar landed alot of body shots capped off with crosses or uppercuts. Actually, Oscar stunned Pernell twice with a vicious uppercut. Pernell was the reason that fight didn't live up to the hype, he didn't want to engage at all. Yes, he landed more jabs, but that was it! He didn't slow oscar down from coming forward all night and putting the heat on whitaker. Yea Pernell made Oscar miss alot, but Oscar landed more clean effective punches, that's the bottom line. And in such a close fight, Pernell really blew the last round.
I beg to differ, Pernell made himself look silly at times. Dude was clowning in a fight he wasn't winning. It was ridiculous.
